I am considering a dress and while I love the style and fit, I hate that it is white. My daughter is very pale and I think white washes her out more.

you can use dylon or the apple barrel method but if there are other materials on the dress they may not all dye the same shade depending on what they are made of. It can be tricky but it can be done.

I emailed you HH. Sewing a bodice and skirt definitely takes practice. I just use the patterns as a guide and adjust the size to fit my client. I actually bought the pattern software to make my own patterns but don't have time to sit and practice with it. LOL

I know that most people use E6000 for adhering stones, and we all know that it stinks to the heavens, and is nearly impossible to clean up if you make a mistake. Some people use Gem-tac, and I have used that also, and liked it. Recently I tried something else, though, and thought I would share. I got it from Dharma Trading Company (they do have a website) and LOVED the results. The product is called Jones Tones. It's actually an adhesive-based fabric paint (and you can use it on spandex, even, because it stretches!!). Their "Glossy Clear" type works very well to glue on stones. No smell, dries fast, easy to clean up if you make an error (before it dries), and it's even washable. It dries very flexible which seems to make the stones less apt to pop off than with glue that dries more stiff. It's also MUCH less expensive, only about $4 for a 4oz bottle.

I am about to start stoning my granddaughter's dress. The dress is largely white with black edging on the skirt and a black lace overlay on the lower part of the bodice. I plan to use crystal or AB stones to stone all the white lace, but am undecided on the black overlay. Would Jet stones work? I don't want to cover the black lace with light colored stones, but also don't want to overdo the black.

That's what I had started to think. My granddaughter is still a baby, so I didn't want to go overboard on the black. I didn't want to do black at all, but my DIL is insisting, so I am working on a happy medium. :-)

For anyone having trouble getting swimwear legs to stay put, or dealing with elastic, I thought I would share my method. Both of these pictures are actually baton costumes, but it works with swimwear too. I don't use elastic at all anymore, as I find this makes a smoother leg-line, doesn't ride up nearly as badly (even without butt-paste), and generally fits better. It is essentially a very narrow sleeve cuff. You can copy and paste these links to see pictures of suits (like I said, both are actually twirling costumes) I did with this method.

I found a really cheap fabric store for pageant dress fabric. There sparkle organza is only $2.00 a yard if you order 5 yards are more. There stretch velvet is even cheap.I just made a order from them and I got my order quick. They also sent tons of fabric samples with my order for free. This is the cheapest I have found this type of fabric to be here in the US.Some might already know about them but this is for the ones that dont. Here is the link

Do you prefer the airbrush method over the dying method? I am trying to find something a little easier than using the fabric paint and trashing my dryer (: I thought my husband was going to die of a heart attach... Anyways how do you airbrush the fabric...do you airbrush the dress when it is complete or spray the fabric first? Thanks for your help!

I make bodice then tape off what I don't want airbrushed and airbrush. Let it dry and I have put in the dryer after it's dry and seem to do fine. There is paints for airbrushing fabric that Hobby Lobby sells. It is sooo much easier. Dry time is super fast and you can do one layer after another. I also do my trims.

Sorry one more question...what kind of airbrush gun do you use. I am using a hobby airbrush gun with compressor but it seems to be taking a long time to spray them. I have been spraying for an hour now and still am nowhere near finished. I think it is faster to make them :) Thanks again for any help!

There is a needle on the airbrush gun that you can adjust so that more or less product mixes with the air. Be careful not to let too much come out at once. It takes me about 2 hours to spray a skirt, bodice and lace.

This airbrush talk makes me curious. It sounds so much neater than dip dyeing. Do you need the fabric medium? Does your fabric get stiff? I would be willing to buy an airbrush gun if it was not as messy and did just as a job as dip dyeing.

As for me I took the airbrush kit back to the store. It took me well over 3 hours to spray it and I have still been touching it up. I was not happy with the finished product. With that said I do love the way the airbrush looks. It is very pretty. I realize the first time I used the airbrush method was going to take longer but I think I could get a more even coloring with dipping and faster too (even with cleaning the dryer). My DH went and found a cord that is like an extension cord for the dryer when I can plug in another dryer...needless to say I will soon have a "dye" dryer in the garage to trash.

I really wish the airbrush system would have worked out for me because I do like it. I just don't have time to waste when I have other orders to fill. Maybe it is the impatient factor in my genes :)

Hi! My dd has decided she wants to be in a pageant. She is going to be in a natural one in about a month. I am a clothing designer, but have never even thought about designing a pageant dress. She just turned 6 last week. She is VERY tall for her age, probably looks about 8, is a babydoll dress better than a cupcake? And is black and white zebra as an accent with pink as the main color too much for a pageant? I don't want her to stand out in a bad way. Her age group is 4-6. Thanks!

I have been designing pageant attire for little girls for over 9 years now and for adults for over 11 years. Baby doll dresses are really not for about 5 year olds and up. You can do it but since she is so tall it will take away from her. Also there is nothing wrong with zebra and pink but I would really do pink with some zebra...does that make sense? For example make her a cupcake skirt and fitted bodice out of the pink then decorate it with some, not over kill, zebra. Honestly because of her age and you saying the pageant is natural, it might be best to make her a long pink dress and do the waist tie in zebra or something along those lines. Cupcake skirts are more for semi-glitz to full glitz pageants. Does that make sense? Natural pageants want to focus on her face only and then the dress last if they have time. lol

Thank you! Yes, that does make sense about the color. Does the dress have to be floor length or will a knee length be ok? Since she will be competing against 4 year olds I don't want her to look completely different than they do. Unless that will be a good thing. I just can't imagine judging a 4 and 6 y.o.'s against each other. They are so different. Thanks again!

I put my DD in an old tshirt, wrapped her with duct tape and drew the pattern i wanted on the duct tape cut straight down the back to get her out of it. The i put the "pattern" pieces on the fabric and cut them slightly larger for seam allowances. I then sewed them up added the boning in the front back and sides. Worked like a charm. HTH.

Chiffon has be be cut on the bias then hung and recut then serged then hung again....it is alot of work. That is why 99% of designers do not use it anymore. An organza skirt takes like 3-5 hours where a chiffon one will take 3-5 days. You can use anything for a skirt, organza, chiffon, crepe, anything pretty. HTH

How do you cover a cowboy hat with fabric? I have been wondering how to do this, but I just can't figure it out.
Any help?

I need to change a very fluffy white polyester puppy costume to brown. I don't want to dye it as I don't feel comfortable using disperse dye.

Can I use hair spray paint? The Halloween stuff....to give it a brown color? Will this stuff rub off easily?

I can't have it coming off - she's Toto, and it would get all over the Dorothy costume......any ideas????

I use either a thick cotton or super stretch...depends on the size. If it is small like 9 inches or less I use the cotton. My daughters skirt is 15 inches and I use super stretch.

I have seen these lately, so popular and I want four for my daughter's dress. I can sew just fine and bend the wire nicely but sewing the little pockets and then turning them right side out is impossible for me. What measurement do I sew them tubes at and how in the world do I get them right side out without it getting stuck or breaking threads by pulling so hard?

I've tried just gluing it around the wire but that's a huge mess and doesn't turn out smooth and neat. Also, what size stones is everyone using to cover them? 20ss is too small, 30ss seems too small as well so I was thinking 40ss?

Thanks in advance!!!

I have used the store display mannequins. Fairly inexpensive and you can stick pins in, plus nice display pc when photography the dress to sell. However...limited use for certain sizes, unless you buy a couple different sizes. Found mine on ebay...very happy. But here is a link to an ajdustable Dritz childs dress form <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://store.atlantathread.com/drchtafo.html">http://store.atlantathread.com/drchtafo.html</a> Every once in a while you can find on ebay and etsy.

Here is another link. <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://acesewing.com/product.php?productid=17517">http://acesewing.com/product.php?productid=17517</a>

Not a $35 or $50 dollar solution, but then again, can fit most childrens size 6 and up. That's why I chose the mannequin route, because most of what I sew was in the 4T and lower sizes.

Good luck and happy sewing!

I found some organza fabric at Fabric.com for $1.95 a yard.It does not say that it is sparkle organza. It just says organza so I was wondering if someone could look at it and tell me if the Pageant skirts could be made out of it.Also can skirts be made out of organdy? Here is the link.

Yes, that is an organza that is used in pageant skirts. Hard to tell from the picture, but looks like the sparkle organza. Mirror Organza has a different sheen to it. Regular organza, can be a little more dull. If you weren't wanting to make a skirt from it..I wouldn't hesistate. It pick up the light, it has the weight (stiffness) you want for a skirt.

Does anyone know where you can get the cowboy boots and hats for the western wear outfits? I have looked EVERYWHERE,but I can only find the boots and hats with designs on them. And oh yes, (Yeah I know I'm asking a lot-sorry!) I have seen western wear boots and hats that match the fabric that the western wears are made of.How do they do this?)

Thanks,

boots and hats can be found anywhere, ebay, online stores (do a google search) costume shops, even walmart for the boots. You cover them with the same superstretch that the outfit is made of using either fabric glue, spray adhesive and maybe a tiny bit of hot glue on the seams then decorated to match the outfit.

My granddaughter's parents have decided to enter her in a pageant we'd not planned on doing, and there will be no time to sew AND decorate the dress, so I need a ready-to-ship shell. White is fine (I can dye it). Prefer "tank" or halter style. Infant size, about 6 months. Preferably a 2-piece dress. Anyone have one ready to ship NOW?

Using a sewing machine with a rolled foot attachment use the zipzag stitch and feed the fishline into the hem as you stitch. It takes a little getting used to. The amount it takes depends on how tight your ruffles are and how many layers. For two ruffle layers and 3 over layers you will need about 7-10 yards of fabric for a small skirt.

Hi Ya'll
Does anyone regular dye their fabrics, laces, trims, etc? I am lookin to learn to dye all of these items to match the same color. I'm making my girl's pageant dresses and outfits to save money, but can't seem to be able to find a way to dye everything to it matches nicely like the professional dress makers. Someone said use acrylic paint, but I tried and it didn't turn out too well. If anyone knows a good process that actually works, please post!
Thank you

hi, use apple barrel & textile mediaum,I put it in bowl mix it up really good together I use fingers, then add a tiny bit of water & mix, keep doing this until you have desired color, use a pc. of cloth to mix it up & wipe the bottom as you mix, this cloth will collect any clumps of paint that didnt mix right, do it again just to make sure, it usually takes me 2 times, then soak trim until desired color, if you get a darker spot on trim, rub w/fingers to blend, then dry in dryer or hang overnight, beware dryer does turn colors but it doesnt go on other clothes

I need 1.5 yards of either blue (not navy) or red superstretch, as thick as possible without the shiny side. I want it matte on both sides.

I also need white jumbo superstretch to make a bodice top out of, I only need 1/2 a yard of that if possible.

I have bought some online before that wasn't the greatest quality and curled so badly in the dryer after dying. I would really like to skip that stuff this time around... LOL.

Thanks!

I posted that I had a box of turqiouse fabric enough to do a 2t dress and had a good many respond for it. I have tons of trims and fabric scraps that I will never get around to using. The pile is just getting bigger and bigger. So I need to box it into several packages and let people that have tht time to use it take it. I have fabric and trims in pinks, blues, yellows, purples, oranges, corals, and so on. Email me and let me know how much and what colors you want, you pay shipping.

Ms Nona will be deeply missed, she was a great woman who loved sharing her knowledge and helping all of us Mom's who are trying to "do-it-ourselves"! I haven't been to this board in a while, but I came today to ask Ms Nona if she had any white superstretch. May God Bless your family!

So I'm making a cupcake skirt right now for my 15 month old. I've got the fishline hem technique down and so far I have 3 layers, but it just doesn't look nearly full enough. I'm thinking I may not be making the circles big enough so the fabric isn't being bunched enough. Can anyone tell me some approx. measurements for the circle skirt to make it more full?

Even for a 6 inch skirt I make 2 rows of ruffles and then 3 top layers. This makes 5 layers total. If it is over 12 inches then I always do 3 and 4 for 7 layers total HTH

HI! How would a white and black beauty dress look with black dress shoes? Our daughter is 9. Hubby seems to think that this is a great idea lol MEN. I have never seen girls wear colored shoes for beauty. It is a smaller pageant but still IDK.

But I have never, ever seen anything but white shoes at any level pageant in the last 10 years. Thats not to say that people don't do it or that it wouldnt "look" good, but it is what the judges are looking for and the director should be able to tell you if that is a no no or not.

It is with sad hearts that we share the news of our beloved mother's passing away. Nona Florin went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus early on Sunday morning, January 2nd, 2011. After experiencing complications from surgery in Oct. and enduring a long hospital stay, she is finally pain-free and at peace. She was ready to go to heaven ~ she passed away quickly and peacefully.

We are currently in the process of planning a special service to celebrate and honor her life. The details are still pending, but we are tentatively looking at the afternoon of Sunday, January 16th.

On behalf of my father and family, thank you for all your prayers and thoughtful expressions of love/concern. We deeply appreciate it!

Love and Grace ~ Deb Seger

Ms. Nona was a beloved person to many in the pageant world and my heart is saddened by the loss of such a wonderful lady, however it is also filled with joy that she is now at peace and with our Lord in heaven.

She made my daughter's first pageant shell and I bought fabric from her for many years. Ms. Nona was a treasure to us here and we will miss her very much.

Superstretch is generally used for the bodices on pageant dresses...but not all designers use superstretch. Just about any fabric can be used. (Note: When using superstretch you also generally use the wrong side of the fabric) not as much shine. Organza and Chiffon are used for the short skirts...also depends on what type of skirt you are going for. Organza does the best for Cupcake skirts. Chiffon works beautifully for southern style skirts (longer top layer..not as puffy on top, but still full underneath). The underlayer ruffles can be a matching color cotton or poly blend or the same same fabric as the top layers of the skirt. Each person has their own preferred way of doing it, and generally prices vary accordingly. Stones. Most desired stones are Swarovski stones. You can purchase on-line. Depends how many you order will depend on which vendor is best for you. But starting out, and not having to open an account etc. Try Tami's Place. She has an ebay store and is a web store. Fast, reliable and good quality. Fair pricing. The Rhinestone guy, also fair pricing sometimes you can get fantastic deals/specials. Generally the more you order from anyone..the better the price break. Also do a little reading up on stones. There are flatbacks and pointbacks..used in different applications and can give you a completly different look on your stone design. Find out the right glues to use for your design. Lace can be bought on-line and dyed to match. Dyeing the fabrics is more like painting. Apple Paints are used to dye/paint the lace to match the fabric of the bodice. There are many many previous posts on this board. You can learn alot by doing a search in the archives. Like how to do the curled hem. How to dye the fabric etc. Good luck on your new endeavor.

Hi! I'm going to put my 15 month old daughter in her first pageant in a few months. But since we've never done it, it's sort of a trial run for us. My husband only agreed if I promised to keep costs down as much as possible. I'm a decent seamstress and I know how to make the cupcake skirts which is what she will be wearing. But I can't find any patterns online for the top. I'd like to find one that is somewhat easy to sew and that I can add lots of beading and lace too. I'd also really like it to be the halter style. Please help! The pageant is in a couple months! :)

Try ebay..there are a couple of people that are selling patterns. I think Christy Merchant does and My Pageant Kid. However be prepared to alter a "stock" pattern from My Pageant Kid. I have bought many patterns and the entire CD of collections of patterns. I am very pleased with them, however I have had to re-design the halter tops a bit. They seemed to all gap in the middle more than I would like to see. I think a couple of other shell designers use her patterns too...and I have had to re-design those same tops. If you can't find a "PAGEANT" pattern. Adapt a McCalls or Simplicity pattern you like. I do a lot of pageant wear and costuming. I have a huge collection of stock patterns from the major and not so major brands, and refer to them often when designing or re-designing something. I can make patterns too...but it's so much faster and easier to take a stock layout and build off of that. Hope that helped.

I have some large scraps folded in a box that are turquoise blue. There is glitter organza, glitter satin, and stretch fabric for bodice. All you would need to make a size 2T dress or if you mix a different turquiose in the skirt you could get a larger sized dress out of it. I always say that I will use my scraps to make smaller dresses but then I pack them up and forget that I have them. So I am going to give this box to anyone that wants it. Hi there! I did post that. I emailed the Seller of the following link on what she used, and she did say to use clothes line wire. I know some brands can bend out of shape, so you need to get a good roll that doesn't. Like one the has steel in it. I have looked at floral wire, and I found it to be too flimsy for this purpose.

Can anyone give me any tips, ideas, help or advice on ho to make the tutu skirts used for the face dress? It has a liner under the tulle and the waistband is like superstretch folded over but not sure how to get the tulle in and even all the way around and without it being thick after it is gathered.
TIA!

Hi all,
I have been told that this is the forum to use to find out how to dye anything!!! So, here goes. My daughter has winter formal coming up and has a lavender colored formal that she wants to be black. It is 100% Polyester. Is it possible to dye it? I have heard different things, some say it wont take dye, others say it will but you have to use really toxic things to make it work, etc. Please HELP!!!
Thanks!!!

The hat doesn't really need to be tight, in fact i recommend that it fits her head properly and comfortably. Your H/M stylist will cut slits in the side of the hat, where the hat band is, and then will securely pin the hat to your dd's head. This is the proper way to do this. My gd dances, tumbles, and full on pro-ams and her hat does not budge. Our H/M stylist is Teresea Yee, I'm sure others do this same thing.

We show horses but do not use a hat that would be used in a horse show. I purchase the hats on ebay that are called gambler's hats. They are easiest to cover with fabric and embellish, and look the best on stage for pageantry.

I forgot the shoe question :)

My GD uses a Jazz Boot, as she dances. The boot can be dyed to match the WW, also stoned. Most of the little tykes wear an actual child's cowboy boot, but once the child is dancing, tumbling, the boot is very impractical and hinders the movement and routine.

Yes..it depends on the fabric. And if was custom dyed or factory dyed. If it was custom dyed also depends if the fabric was heat set or not. Woolite has worked well for me..with over dipping/cleaning of a bodice and skirt. However I have had problems with spot cleaning a dress. Just took a bit of water to a bodice and the dye came right out...ended up with a nice little white spot on a blue dress. Was lucky enough where the problem was. I was able to add lace and stones, to cover. A friend had the same problem. Didn't notice the dye removed until it was dry. She had little white chicken pox LOL all over the bodice (she bought it from someone, and wanted to spot clean before putting on her daughter). So try an area on the inside if the lining is made of the same fabric...or try in an inconspicous place. Good luck.

Traditionally it is dull side, but more and more designers are using shiny side every once in a while because it looks like satin from the stage and is pretty. It is really up to you but I feel like the shiny side snags easy so I use the dull side unless someone requests otherwise.

I have seen several new dresses with the shiny side outwards and it is pretty.

You can just cut one circle. Cur small circle for neck. Make a cut from outside to inside. Use some bias tape at neck edge leaving enough on each end to tie Finish all other edges. Wala a cap LOL

Several different things could be the problem.

1. Curl comes mosly from the amount of gathering. You want your gathers as tight as possible.

2. Ruffles cut on the bias will ruffle better than those made from straight cut strips.

3. You have to hold tension in both the front and back as you feed the ruffle through the serger.

4. Also check what type of fishing line you are using. You want the cheap stuff and 30 or 40 lb test. When I come home from Wal-Mart with a bag of $2.98 spools my husband just looks at it and says "junk - not worth steeling from you," lol. The nicer, more expensive fishing line is too soft and flexible - good for fishing but not for curling.

5. You might also try winding a length of the line around something smaller than the spool it comes on. A large dowel or my favorite - a large broom handle cut into pieces, works great. After you have the line rewound and the end secured drop it into a pot of boiling water for a few minutes. Take it out and let it cool and dry. The hot bath softens the line so that when it cools it reforms itself to the smaller curve. Be careful to not go too small with the dowel.

Exactly what Glenna said. I think her first point is MOST important. The national level dresses have TONS of fabric put into the skirt, very tightly gathered. Also, just my opinion. I prefer the fishing line in bigger curls so I don't boil mine. It is just preference.

Hi Betty,
I tried to email you but it was returned.
Sorry that I did not answer sooner but I have been in the hospital again for more surgery. Not many of the ladies on this site knew about that. But I am back home again.
As for making afghans, I do all of the different stitches. I have 2 baby ones - shell stitch and ripple stitch, one double bed size and one single size. I can make them in any color or you can send your own yarn.
Hope to talk to you again,
Nona

I think I may have made an error when I first read your post. Were you aking about "Dress Shells" or afghans? If it is dress shells, I do make them. However I make just the shells - no decorating.
I am waiting for my dress shop to get finished so I can start sewing again. That is why I have been crocheting. Keeps my mind and hands working.

Hello! I have heard that this forum is great for info regarding costume-making, ect. I have a question regarding how to paint/dye a cotton/poly blend suit (jacket and pants). I know that polyester does not take regular dye (unless your boil it). I do not have a big enough pot to accomadate the suit to use disperser dye. I have heard that you can dip dye using thinned out fabric paint and then heat set it. So my question is:

What supplies to use? Should I dye the cotton part first or just use fabric paint?

What kind of fabric paint? And how to prepare it?

The best process for getting even overall color on the entire suit?

If this topic has already been discussed can someone link me to it? Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to your responses and wisdom!

While not a pagent mom (or dad for that matter) I do make my own Halloween costume every year and I was hoping for some advice. I need a pair of green gloves for an Aquaman costume and all I have found are black gauntlets made from polyester and polystyrene foam. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to paint these? I thought spray painting them white, then going over the white with green would take. Any/all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Have you thought of making your foam gauntlets from white spacer and dying them? Spacer takes dye pretty well and can be found at many stores that sell upholstery fabrics. You can also order it at www.spandexhouse.com

Hi!
Can anyone direct me to a place where I can get some of the fabric being used in petti skirts and tutus? Not the stiff tulle but the softer stuff, someone said it was called stretch chiffon. Any help is appreciated :)

Google "cut roll chiffon." Here is an example to get you started - <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.karimeaway.com/products/588">http://www.karimeaway.com/products/588</a> . Be diligent because prices vary greatly on the net especially if you have a wholesale number.

The ruffles under most of the bows is made by fishlining the discarded circles from cutting out the waist of the skirt pieces. After they are fishlined, fold, tuck and scruntch them into a desirable shape and sew onto the back of the bow.

You use the center out of the skirt,,,its already cut instead of trashing it ,, you fold and make it ( you have to be making a skirt tho)

Is there a trick for putting boning in the princess seams in a bodice? I made a bodice this weekend and usually put boning in every seam but it tends to roll on those curved seams. I ended up taking it out of the front. Tricks? or suggestions?

[ Post a Reply to This Message ]
[> Subject: I sew the boning to the lining, and not the bodice front. You can also topstitch the princess seams to hold it in place.
