Well I have a comment or two to make on the 100.00 shells. This is exactly the crap I am talking about in the pageant world, that has been going on for years, and thank god for the boards today, we as mothers, who cannot sew, ( I am not one of them), base our funds on how much something costs, how much time and effort it takes to find someone decent who sews for us without nickel and diming us to death, we are constantly blamed for nickel and diming the seamstresses, well well well, the tables are turned, good, I am sick of paying sky high prices for swimsuits and shells when come to find out they pay someone like us mothers to sew for them, shame on us for paying for it, I hope we take heed of these people and stop giving them our hard earned money, I for one feel obligated to boycott these kinds of people, right down to the people that sell the fabric, if it ain't fair it ain't right, now bash away if you want but I work to damned hard for my dollar, thanks for listening.

The debate about shell and dress prices has gone on on this board for years. You have those who sell $100 shells and those who wouldn't touch a shell for less than $250. You have those who sell "high" glitz dresses for $400 and those who sell them for $2,400.

Unfortunately everyone sewing thinks their work is top notch. You as the customer have to do your homework and decide if their idea of "top notch" matches with yours. If you are a newbie - don't rely on the advice of the other newbie mom sitting beside you. She is still learning too. Find the mothers of the children that win and talk to them about what is expected.

The best piece of advice I can give a mom is to remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch and if it sounds too good to be true you probably need to keep on looking.

Very well said. Just a note to add....If someone is willing to sew for less money per hour or per project than another seamstress/designer, they have that right, just as the other seamstress or designer has the right to ask more for her time and effort. And one other point. If a seamstress/designer is willing to construct a shell at a lower price point, often it's to another designer/decorater, and it's usually because of a certained quantity being promised to by. Very much like wholesaling. So please mom who posted above and sounds upset...don't think everyone is out there to rip everyone off.

Personally... I am soo busy with my full-time job, school, my own granddaughters, nieces and a couple of regular clients pageant attire I don't have time to sew a high quanitity of shells to reduce to wholesale pricing. However, when I do take new orders I put alot of time and love into all my work and it's not worth sewing/constructing a pageant shell or anything else for that matter for LESS than minimum wage. So if someone is willing to pay, what I am willing to contract out my services for, it's a win win for both. JMOA

to those upset over the prices of shells, I too thought the $250 plus I was quoted on a long skirt shell dress was high. I can sew (well i know who to run a sewing machine anyway). So about two weeks ago I set out to make my own. AND LET ME TELL YOU, I wish now I had just paid the $250 and was waiting for it to come in the mail. BY the time I bought the material, foots for machine, patterns, dvd to show me how, and other little extras you dont think about until you need it. I have spent well over $175. that doesn't even count the hours teaching myself the right ways to sew a pageant dress. I have three daughter and i'm a stay home and still will pay for a shell NEXT time. Thanks to those willing to make them for us. even at $250. I will pay that next time rather than go though this again.
