I have never seen blue and white sparkle but what I would do is use the light blue sequin fabric and just make the white puff sleeve shirt under it. It will still give the Dorothy effect.

It normally depends on the pattern that you will be stoning. But I like to see a combination of different sizes, types (navettes, rivolis, pointbacks, pear shapes) all different sizes. Normally I would say one or two brooch type clusters as a focal point.

the best place I found is in the seams of the bodice. It blends in the seams and doesn't look out of place. I have seen boning sold in Wal-Mart and craft stores or you can buy it off ebay as well.

I used to own one years ago, it was royal blue and had a pin cushion on top. It is perfect for preteen sizing and would be adjustable from a girls sz 10 up to a girls 14 or 16. Does anyone have one for sale, or possibly know where I can order from? Desperate! Thanks for your help! BTW I don't get to the board often, please email any comments to chrystalbells2@aol.com

sew up some piping out of superstretch or velvet, about a quarter inch thick... take a bobby pin and turn it so the seem is now inside (it will now look like piping) then feed your wire of choice through it, cut to desired lengths, and bend into shapes.

hi,
im a high school student from Australia and for my major project in textiles i am going to be making a pageant wear collection. I would just like to enquire if anyone knows any commerical patterns with a basic structure that i could alter. partically in a cup cake style skirt as it will be high glitz. Also i would like to know if the bodice is boned and what type of trimming should i apply to the neckline as i want to incorperate ribbion flowers onto it.
many thanks,
Caitlin.

Good luck with your project. There are many different ways to make a pageant dress but if you get a basic pattern with a bustier style bodice and add straps to it and put boning in the seams at least on the sides and back you should do well. Trims can be pretty much anything you want, many craft and fabric stores have trims that work nicely. Yu can look on dresses for sale on ebay and get some ideas too.

As for the skirt, there are as many different tricks as there are dressmakers and there are some on this board that sell patterns or you could go with a ballerina style skirt pattern and modify for your needs. Most high glitz pageant skirts have 30 or 50 lb fishine serged into the hem to give a curl so the skirt does not go flat. "cupcake" style means different things to different people but it usually means you have several overlayers (3)one shorter than the other stacked and sewn over the ruffle layers so it ends up in the shape of a cupcake. Skirts can be tricky so be patient.

This is a very ambitious project for high school, again good luck.

Wouldn't neon pink be too dark to put on the shocking pink superstretch?? I need to go back to hobby lobby and take my white trim and test them right then and there because the two colors I did buy ended up being too dark.

The bolt of tulle I have is bright red and am not sure I can get dark red tulle. My question is has anyone every tried to layer different colors of tulle to achieve a specific color. I am thinking of buying some wine tulle and layering under my first and every other layer...my lining will hopefully match the super stretch. Anyone experienced with the tulle skirts?

I've used it on many different applications and it works well. It's for glueing decorations such as rhinestones on fabric. You are supposed to be able to wash it. But you don't wash pageant dresses! LOL! I've done it before on one of my daughters dresses and it looked fabulous. I would stick with either holographic(silver) or irredescent (Micro) glitter. You can buy the glue at walmart, in the craft section. HTH!

Hi,

I'm hoping to make a pageant inspired cupcake skirt for my homecoming dress (gotta start early :D). I think I've figured out the rolled hem with fishing line but I'm not sure about anything else!

From reading the boards I think the ruffle layers are done with bias cut strips of organza and are sewn onto some sort of underskirt-is that right? What is the underskirt like?

For attaching everything, I was thinking of putting the ruffles on bias tape first so I can play with spacing--do you think that would screw up the draping? Also how should I join the ends so that the seams don't stick out?

Thank you so so so much!!!

Emily :D

I have a lady wanting a pageant dress made from turquoise superstretch and chiffon - can someone tell me where to find some that matches - I have found superstretch and chiffon at different sites but I want to make sure they match. Thanks so much!

I was taking a look at your website and am wondering what that shiny fabric is that you use in some of your dresses. I'm looking at the white dress on the second banner from the top on your homepage, gold dress on the third banner, and yellow/coral dress on the fourth banner. It actually looks like it could be a different type of fabric used in each dress but I am interested in the shiny effect it give it. If you could let me know what these fabrics are, where I could possibly purchase them, and approx cost per yard that would be great. I've listed my email if you'd rather do that but I figured it would be pretty easy to catch you on here. Thanks!

Hi, I'm in the process of making my daughters new dress. I was wanting to put a pull (I think that's what its called)on the top. Can someone please tell me how its done or is there instructions on it somewhere. I tried and it didn't turn out right.

Yes, I seen on a dress a piece of organza across the top from one side to the other that gathered in the middle. I tried but just didn't turn out right. Didn't know if there was a certain way to do it to get it to come out right.

[ Post a Reply to This Message ]
[> [> [> Subject: I have had trouble with organza, getting it tight enough. Tightly gather your strip of fabric at both ends. Put it on your girl and pin it really tight then steam it flat patting with your hands. After stitching the ends to the dress then you can gather in the middle by pinching and top stitching.

I use panty hose. You can get white panty hose that have a soft feel (not the cheap ones) and dye them to match your dress. If the dress is already finished you can top stitch it around the side seams around the arm holes with your machine if you are going to cover it with trim etc. I have also just turn it under and whip stitched it around the arm holes. I find the panty hose very forgiving since they are so stretchy. HTH.

I love this look also. Never thought of pantyhouse...great idea. I have always used the organza or chiffon. I did have a dress...it turned out nice, but for me...it looked very "Pulled" not enough give/drape in the fabric so it looked tight. But I usually have had to do a few fine tack stitches to some of the gathering to "stay" in the right spot. You don't see them since they are done inbetween the folds/gathers. You can also use the tack stitches to pull in or make tighter a fold or gather that looks a little to loose, so you get the right look you are going for.

Hi all,,,I have a Junior Size 5-7 Glitz sportswear for sale. Black one piece jumpsuit with a take off 1 sleeved jacket. It is black, silver and turquoise w/ blue fox fur, lots of stonework, has a hat and some hair accessories. Has extra hem letdown and can be easily taken in or out. My daughter quit Glitz pageants, and its time for a new home. She wore it once at a small pageant, so it has not been seen on a national level. It is gorgeous and I'd love for someone to have a fabulous sportswear to showcase on stage! I'm asking 300, plus shipping, and I need to sell it this week! Please email me for pictures!

Cindy
super cute suit btw. Sometimes it is timing, maybe a non paying bidder or Someone needs it bad and in a hurry. There are also moms like me who have been known to pay more when it's also exactly what they were looking for. Either way, it's a great time to sell those patriotic and rwb suits.
I only sell on eBay ocassionally now, their fees and the fact that the demand/economy has things selling for next to nothing just doesn't add up.

Pageant Mom Designs is an EBAY store. She has them for $6. Get it in white and buy some paint to match the dress. If you want trim dye some trim at the same time you dye the choker. If you do not sew then glue the trim on and add your stones. Someone will need to add snaps or a hook. Not too hard...

What is the formula for mixing the fabric medium with the Apple Barrell paints

I have dyed cotton fabrics w/ RIT dyes before but never pageant shells... any pointers or tips would be appreciated

Thanks for the advice on the costume and timelines, etc. In regard to the Jonas Bros, my friend threw a Jonas Bros birthday party for her daughter last year. She was dressed in layered tank tops, an arm band, leggings and tutu skirt. I think it was all purple, black and zebra. Throw in a fedora style hat, and some Converse tennies, and I think you will be good to go!

Not paid yet, but acknowledged that she owes me....lol. However, I did find out that in her division for the competition, she scored perfect scores with every judge in the outfit I made! That helps soothe my aches. ;) I asked the director to please make sure the mom knows that as well since this pageant doesn't give out scores.

What is the best place to get wholesale rhinestones? I've already registered with Rhinestones Unlimited, but I was wondering if that was the lowest.

Thanks!

try pulver importing out of new york. You can google their info. Most wholesale places require a minimum purchase ie: 10 gross of stones at a time (30-40 ss and under). The bigger stones and chunky shaped stones normally one gross at a time. You have to ask, plus you have to pay a currency conversion charge that changes daily.

Most people only decorating one outfit do not need that many stones, but if you are decorating several it is best to buy wholesale.

If you are dealing with a business that sells in lots smaller in size they are likely selling second hand and will charge a little more than wholesale to make up their costs for seperating, counting and repackaging the stones.

How do you figure your pricing when making costumes for others? I had a very frustrating situation with my last outfit.
So, once a parent approaches you about making an outfit:
How do you figure out the price to charge?
Do you ask for money up front? If so, how much?
At what point do you tell them they've waited too long and you can no longer squeeze in their outfit--regardless if they were the first to ask? (I mean, I couldn't do anything without measurements!)
Also; any advice on this...........I purchased a hat to go along with the outfit and the mom said she would leave a check for me under her mat when I dropped off the outfit that needed to be hemmed. No check. I left the outfit anyway since the pageant was the next day (I only had 9 days to make a 1910's style long skirt and lined jacket). But, now, how do I approach this mom about the money for the hat?
And, she gave me a deposit for another outfit for her other daughter. At this point, I had so many issues with her (IT WAS BAD) that I want to give back the deposit and tell her to find someone else. But, this is someone I have to deal with on a regular basis for the next several months. Any advice on how to handle this tactfully?
Thanks in advance.

If you decide to refund her deposit, first take your past due balance out and make sure you have some kind of invoice about the charge otherwise you might never get paid for the hat. I also think that a deposit is non refundable usually. Tell her that the working relationship just isn't working out and you feel it's best to cut your losses before things get more ugly. When a potential customer contacts you for a custom outfit, list the payment schedule and the dates you need deposit and measurements or else you can't guarantee it will be completed on time. Most people understand that these outfits take alot of work and you pay for quality. Good Luck!

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS put everything in writing! I have learned the hard to make them sign a contract laying out the timeline and payment guide. Always get 50% up front (non-refundable) so you are not out of pocket for their materials. That is not unsusual for custom clothing.HTH

The yellows are slightly different from what you see on the monitor. Yes, the skirt seems a little softer. But I intentionally made the sash, that is going underneath the chest line, So it would blend the two yellows. But like I said before, it's really not that much of a difference in the shades of yellow.

All a make up cape is, is a circle of fabric with a hole in the center and a split up one area leading to the circle. You can use ribbon or velcro to close it. I used a bias tape to finish the edges. You can stone it, put appliques or machine embroider to personalize it for the child :)

put the dress on her and measure from her elbow up to where the shoulder strap for the dress is. decide how large you want the ruffle to be....for example if her arm length for the sleeve is 7 inches, then you could do a 4 inch sleeve with a 3 inch ruffle. then measure her bicep to see how wide you need the sleeve to be. take the lace and cut a rectangle for the sleeve portion, the length plus 2 inches (for seams) and the width of her arm plus an inch (for seams), and cut a long strip of material the length of the ruffle plus an inch (for seams). gather the ruffle and attach it to the rectangle that you are going to use for the sleeve, then turn the sleeve inside out and stitch it closed. flip it back to the right side and attach snaps to the outside of the sleeve at the top and then sew in snaps to the inside of the shoulder strap. hope this helps!

I sold two items on ebay (haven't sold there in a while) the auctions ended Friday afternoon. I sent invoices but have not had so much as an aknowledgement from either winning bidder that they have won let alone when and how they plan to pay. Is this normal to keep a seller on the line for several days before contacting them?

I am getting nervous I know they have 8 days before I can take any action but after 3 days I expected at least an email saying yeah I won can I pay on such and such day?

Am I being too impatient? I guess I just find it kinda rude to bid on an item and then dissapear when the auction ends.

Unfortunately Ebay has become a buyers market. They have changed their rating system so that if a buyer does not pay there is nothig negative you can do to mark their account. Every time I sell on EBay and get burned I say I won't sell again but where else can you get that kind of traffic? Definitely complain to Ebay, I have. Who knows if enough people stop selling or complain maybe they will change their system again.

I usually give people the benefit of the doubt. It's only been a few days, and also, you can check their feedback.

I appreciate your comments. The person has zero feedback and account is 3 yrs old so maybe they are just not up to speed on what to do. I'm trying to be patient.

I know everyone is new one time or another, but I recently went through H3LL trying to deal with a zero feedback ebayer. So now on all my auctions I cancel bids of those with zero feedback who do not email me prior to bidding. If they email and I get a good vibe from them I will accept the bid, but if they don't then I put them on my blocked buyers list. I don't want to deal with the headaches. :)

I sell on Ebay every day and if you will look in your sold items and on the right hand side of the page it will tell you how many days since the sale. When it reaches 4 days, you will have an option to file a non paying bidder warning. Just follow the pages as they pop up. Then if you don't get paid within 7 days you will receive your final value fee back and can relist. This happens to me a lot, but I have found the sooner you can send the warning the faster you get your money. I myself believe that when you click on that buy it now button , then confirm your bid, then you should pay immediately while you are at the place to pay. Never could understand why people will buy, then walk away from the computer. If you don't have the money to pay for it right then, just don't buy it. Same goes for auction bids. Overall I have great repeat customers and love it, but always a few bad ones.
Nancy

I emailed and asked if she changed her mind and still no answer so I offered it to the next lowest bidder and she replied right away. I guess I just got a bad bidder. The other auction came thru for me right after I posted so I got lucky. Now I remember why I don't sell on ebay much anymore.

Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it very much

Not a sewing question...but I am looking for a Little Attitudes dress. I am looking for a certain style...It's green with a chiffon bottom skirt and the bodice is the traditional Little Attitudes sequins/beading with ladybugs. I saw one on ebay...but it was too small for my granddaughter, but fell in love with the design. Can't seem to find anywhere. Also if you have another style and wanting to sell...I would love to see a pix and price. We have one that is now almost too small...and we love the Little attitudes for crowning/parades and appearances. Oh size 4T, and may buy other sizes if I like the design and they will work for my nieces. Thank you in advance for checking your closets. Lisa lisaj@citlink.net

I started out 20 years ago, bought my first machine used and did all my daughters clothes, don't waste your money on videos and how too stuff, go to the fabric store buy some cheap fabric and practice, practice, practice, check into the pageants your going to do, pageants are expensive do the local ones, state ones, stay away from the national big ones, way too pricy, go to consignment shops, thrift stores, and check into used stuff too, get your pageant info first and then go from there, check back here often any questions let me know, I am a grandma now sewing for my 7 month old granddaughter, cannot wait, but trust me ask questions, claire.

Mrs. Nancy sells pageant material - her email is below. You want superstretch or velvet for the bodice.

You can buy chiffon or organza for the skirt from Mrs. Nancy too or you can get it at a fabric store and Wal-Mart. You'll need fishline for the skirt hem - you can buy it at Wal-Mart. You can also go to Michael's or Joann's or Ebay and find lace for the bodice. There is a fabric warehouse on the internet too that some buy the supplies from. Look for jumbo spandex if you are buying superstretch on the web.

I buy stones from rhinestones4less.com. She is good and ships fast. There are stones on Ebay too. Some people buy from merchantoverseas.com but I'm not sure how to do that.

You just dye materials to match when you need to. Most use apple barrell paints to dye with.

Hope that helps.

All you need to do is wrap fabric around it to increase the size. That's what old school seamstresses have done for years. Works like a charm :)

I have a question for everyone. Why or how can someone sell dress shells for $65? Someone aasked how much I charged and I normally don't sell plain shells but gave her a quote and she said her regular shell lady charges $65 for just a dress and $99 for the dress with all accessories. How is that possible? A cupcake skirt alone can take 15 yards of organza...Is she sewing for free????

There is no way even at wholesale costs to make a GOOD pageant shell for that price. With organza...Super stretch.. Boning, clips, zippers, grommets, thread to make it costs over that. And.... There is something called Time that we need to be paid for. I have worked hard years after years to achieve the skirts I make now. Always perfecting them and this takes TIME. Thanks Rena. I feel better knowing that I am not crazy. Supplies are expensive, especially quality ones not too mention time away from my family and other obligations. To quote my husband, "if it is not worth your time, don't do it".

They use paper thin organza, stretch fabric that is not comparable a they sell dirt cheap product there. So if you live there yes you can put it out that cheap but... The quality is not there. However some pageant people do not know what they bought until they get it. If they are new they still will think is is okay.

If you dd looks better in a long dress, and the rules permit it, then put her in what she looks her best in. I think it's more important for the child to feel great and it will reflect in her performance.

I have one. I made it for my daughter and she wore it once and won overall and best dress in it. I was not going to sell it but I can always make her another since we won't be doing pageants since ball season started:( It sounds like our kids wear the same size. My daughter is a 12+ also. It has a short skirt though so let me know if you are interested. It is hot pink and black.

I have a dress, stoned it myself. Really don't care for what I did, and would like someone who know what they're doing to re-do it. The only problem is that I don't want to spend a fortune getting it redone. Pageant isn't until this summer.

You can hand was in tub with woolight and luke warm water. Then put between two large towels and press excess water out, hang to fluff. those large culligan water jugs make great dryers. just toss it over the top. Assuming it is not to large of a skirt/petticoat. and hang dry.

What I do is saturate the fabric with paint. Lie completely flat. Get all wrinkles and air bubbles out. Then allow to dry. I usually add a fan to help speed up the process but can take overnight.

Does not sound like your paint is mixed good. Dylon will not work. I am pretty sure it does not work on synthetics. I mix a bottle of paint in an old pitcher or bowl with warm water and mix well. Some shake it in a jar, I just mix with a spoon or whisk. Dip your fabric and rub any spots. Let excess drain onto old towels and air dry for a bit. Then throw fabric and towels in dryer tumble until mostly dry then dip again. You can look through all the archives and find this subject. Everybody has different methods. Too bad someone doesn't make some stretch fabric in a better range of colors then we would not need to do all this! Good Luck!

HERE'S WHAT I FOUND TO REALLY WORK FOR ME!!
Using a plastic tub, I ran HOT water into tub, then added the Apple Barrel paints and Textile Medium, about 1 bottle of Textile Medium for every 2 bottles of acrylic paint. I got my water so hot that I had to wear rubber gloves to handle the fabric, but I really worked fabric in the color bath. Then I squeezed as much water out as possible, the put into the spin cycle of my washing machine (no added water) to spin excess water out. I checked fabric for any streaks (very seldom found any when using the hot water), but if any streaking noticed, I reworked the fabric in the bath, before putting fabric into clothes dryer to heat set. Repeat as necessary to get desired depth of color.

Before adding the superstretch to the color bath, I really swished my hands through the hot water to dissolve the paint really well!! Using the rubber gloves really made a difference...I got the water really hot!

Hi Ladies, we are going to a national in Indianapolis that has a category "Circle City Wear." This refers to the Indy 500--ech--not relishing the idea of a cap and jumpsuit! I would love to hear any ideas you might have, we are females 13 and 30, and a boy who's 5 (he's the easy one right!) Thank you!!
