Thank you for telling us what the tobacco industry think of us. I don't smoke and I will NEVER start. Your talk helped my boyfriend quit and he hasn't smoked since before spring break. I'm all for that.

Hey, Bree! Hi, Ginny! Great website. Where's the tar jar? That's what grossed me out the most. I smoked a couple of times and think the smell sucks (get it?). After hearing you talk about what's in your book I'll never start. Don't forget my signed copy when you come back! love, Julie

Kudos to you Georgina for your message about tobacco, but until everyone (including government) realizes that nicotine is a dangerous highly addictive drug, smoking will continue. Every drag hits the reward center in the brain and that is what people don't realize. I have seen the devastation that tobacco causes. How long are we going to do this??????

Hey, I Was At Skaha Lake Middle School In Penticton B.C while you came and talked.
i was very inspired because i have been trying to get my father to quit smoking for a couple of months now.
You have helped me learn more about smoking so i can tell him what it has been doing to him, although he already knows.
he has been smoking in the house.
and the smoke makes me nauseous.
And i really don't want to get a second hand smoke disease.

Thank You For Everything.

Hi Georgina, i'd like to thank you again for dropping by my school recently, (Listowel District Secondary School, Perth County) and inspiring me to help out with smoking awareness. I don't think you actually got my name, I was the guy who approached you at the end and mentioned my idea about music/songs that would raise awareness. Anyway, I haven't put anything together yet but I wanted to thank you in advance for your help. If you would like (and have the time to) drop me an E-mail then could you please do so, if you have anymore ideas about what i could do.

Hi Georgina!
Again I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to you for not only helping me to quit...but now I am going to try to start my own campaign to encourage those young smokers around me to quit also!

I wanted to tell you that Provincials in Edmonton went very well, they only award to 1st and 2nd place, but insiders tell me that I gained 4th out of 23 amazingly talented girls, I also came out with an 87%! This is all thanks to erasing cigarettes from my life! Guaranteed, I would never have scored so high if I hadn't have quit beforehand! Who knows, perhaps you will see me on Canadian Idol next year!

I really enjoy e-mailing you with tales of my progress. I hope you enjoy hearing them. I was secretly hoping that you may be prided with the fact that you helped one youth to quit! Maybe it is just silly teenage aspirations...HEHE.

Alyson

P.S. I get paid on Thursday and I am going to PURCHASE a copy of your book!

Hi Georgina,
Its me! The singer from Glenmary who you talked to about quitting. I just wanted to tell you that I am extremely appreciative of the terrific, yet horryifying, presentation you gave the other day. I must say, out of all of the educational presentations that school has presented us with, yours was the most captivating, interesting, and inspirational one I have ever witnessed. I wanted to add that the day after I watched your presentation I went straight to the town library on my spare to loan out your book. As I told you I have been smoke free for a few days and now it is your book that is getting me through the cravings, (as well as the large amount of candy and sugarfree gum I mentioned to you!) Each day that I read more and more of your helpful book, I become more determined that smoke will stay out of my life and out of my lungs for good. In the 5 days that I have been without a cigarette I have already noticed a significant improvement in my voice and so did my singing teacher, Provincials on Saturday may not be as hard as I thought it would be, now that I am an ex-smoker! What I really want to tell you is that thanks to you and your curiosity and intelligence towards the fraud that is the tobacco companies, I now have the much needed drive and determination to erase cigarettes from my daily life, if not from my thoughts. So, once again thankyou ever so much! I will keep e-mailing you to inform you of my further progress.

Yours Sincerely and Thankfully,
Alyson Sheehan, Gr. 11, Glenmary School, Peace River, AB

Hi Brady and thank you for getting back to me here. I apologize that your original post got deleted (my mistake, sorry) so I have re-posted your question.

The information I was able to get is for North America only(which is the reference point for the numbers mentioned). According to Health Canada and the figures from the CDC (Centre for Disease Control in the U.S.) the approximate figure for smoking-related deaths is 500,000 annually (some consider this conservative but I prefer to err on the side of understatement rather than exaggeration).

That means 1,369 smokers die every day from tobacco related disease which is approximately one-half of the 3,000 daily figure for replacement smokers we talked about. Bear in mind this does not take into account relapse for those who quit smoking and other regional variances.

Some people your age have worked hard to raise awareness about tobacco deaths. If you click here (bottom of page 2) to see one way they have addressed the number of daily tobacco deaths in the U.S. with an equivalent number of body bags dumped outside of the world's largest tobacco company's head office (the numbers do not include Canadians).

"Truckloads of teens pull up outsidethe headquarters of a major tobacco company. They unload heavy body bags from the backs of the trucks, and pile themon the sidewalk outside the building. By the end of the spot, the teens have piled up 1,200 body bags representative of thenow more than 1,200 people who die every day from smoking-related illness. Our strategy is working.

The American Journal of Public Health study cited above shows that in the truth campaign’s first 10 months, its ads have made 12- to 17-year-old kids’attitudes toward tobacco more negative, reducing their future likelihood of smoking. Those 12- to 17-year-olds exposed to truth were more likely to want to join the fight to end smoking, more likely to agree that taking a stand against smoking is important, more likely to agree that the tobacco industry had lied and hidden the truth about the health effects of tobacco, and more likely to agree that cigarettecompanies try to get young people to start smoking."

I hope that answers your question; if not, let me know. Thank you very much for asking.

If you are interested Click Here for the excellent site for these savvy and active young people working to raise awareness about tobacco.

Hi Georgina,
how are you? I just wanted to say that I read your book over the holidays when I was in Cuba and it sparked many interesting conversations while I was there. There was so many people smoking and although I didn't get on anyone's case I still gave a little info on the harmful effects of tobacco. I marked off pages that I think could help me in my campaign and I really enjoyed reading all the info. Great book and I look forward to hearing more of the accomplishments that you encounter. BTW did you hear that the WCB tobacco regulations paper in the NWT got approves and will take effect May 1st. Thats great and also Yellowknife passes a by-law on bars being smoke-free as well. They have done a great job.

Take care,

Thank you for your website. I have not smoked for over three weeks, and I will NEVER smoke another cigarrette again. I have used websites such as yours to use as my mantra each day. I am 35, and I started smoking when I was 22. I tried to use smoking as a crutch to help me get through my terrible family situation, but it only added another terrible situtation...I became a nicotine addict. Now, I am learning that smoking does not make stressful, life situations better...it only adds more stress to the mind and body. To anyone who has never picked up the habit of smoking... PLEASE, TAKE IT FROM AN EX-SMOKER, NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, SMOKE...IT IS NOT WORTH THE DAMAGE IT DOES TO YOUR BODY...YOU WILL DEEPLY REGRET YOUR MISTAKE, BECAUSE ONCE YOU ARE HOOKED, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO OVERCOME.... once again, thank you for your care and website...

Georgina,
I absolutely loved your sessions at the youth summit, you had alot of information that I have never heard until now. I now recognize smokers more than ever. Now when I see mothers or fathers smoking around their children, I am disgusted and horrified at what they are doing to their childrens health. Now more than ever, I am happy that since my parents have owned a restaurant for 22 years, that last summer they went smokefree, before your seminar I may have never noticed the significance of it. Thank you for opening my eyes and awakening an urge I now have to get involve with tobacco awareness and prevention. Thank you.

Thank you.

Thanks to all those at the Northwest Territories Department of Health and Social Services who gave such a warm welcome during my recent week in Yellowknife, Fort Providence and Rae/Edzo.

To Sandra B., I look forward to working closely with you and your students as your tobacco awareness programmes expand to include Project Moving Target. I treasure the handmade earrings the students at your school made for me and presented as a thank-you gift.

To the ladies at the Native Women's Adult Education unit, thank you for the beautiful pen. I loved meeting all of you and hope to hear how things are going for you as you continue your studies. If you have difficulty posting here, email me and I'll post your message for you.

To the second year nursing students at Aurora College, thanks for your questions and encouraging feedback - and great sense of humour!

To the students, teachers and principal at St. Pat's - Well today is St. Patrick's Day. Go, Irish! The pen you gave me will be put to good use.

I enjoyed my morning coffee in the mug from Sir John Franklin and it brings fond memories of a busy Friday morning at your school with a film crew recording us all! Thanks to the students for your kind comments.

To Miriam, thank you for working so hard to do the groundwork for a smooth-as-clockwork hectic week (and also timing our drive through permafrost to coincide with a crossing of a small herd of bison!). To Jo and Kathleen, thank you for driving me where I needed to go and getting me there on time. Talking to over 1,000 students in 8 schools, some a 3-hour drive away (now I know what an "ice road" means!), plus two college classes demanded a lot of planning and precision.

I had a wonderful week and I'm grateful to all of you for your kindness, hospitality and professionalism.

Best wishes to the NWT for the advances you have made in protecting your population from tobacco smoke pollution.

A wonderful visit to Canada's True North where I "saw" 1100 students in three days wrapped up with a well-attended evening presentation at the Health Promotion Unit. Many thanks to Ian Parker, Health Promotion Officer for all his hard work and organization.

Thank you, Yukon College, for the friendly welcome your students gave me! Your campus is beautiful and this 'southerner' was grateful the outside walking distances from parking lot to lecture hall are considerately short! The videoconferences to points even farther north were a lot of fun, enabling us to reach additional youth interested to hear about tobacco trickery. I hear there has been follow-up interest from those students in Watson Lake and Mayo.

Project Moving Target is being implemented in northern communities and I look forward to hearing of its success.

I'm sad to report another ineffectual effort has been made to defile this site.

h24-82-74-75.vf.shawcable.net / 24.82.74.75 is the IP address of the poster who left an unsolicited link for us here, and this information and the link has been forwarded to the RCMP and Shaw Cable. The RCMP take a dim view of sick child pornography on websites such as the one sent to us by the above IP address, and Shaw Cable do not condone use of their internet service for spamming and distributing illegal material of this especially deviant nature. This board is read by students from elementary school age through to high school. Those who wish they could undermine our efforts overestimate their ability to cause disruption.

We do what is necessary to address these sorry reflections on those who claim to "fight for freedom" (as long as you agree with them) and we move on. Too much to do to allow petty and sick-minded efforts to slow us down!

Thanks to all in Whitehorse and those other destinations in the Yukon who gave me such a warm welcome - especially when the temperatures dipped to minus 27 (minus 43 in Old Crow)!

Me and my dad visited your web pages. I like them. My dad said to say good for you. He is here with me now. I did what you said and asked him to help me find this so I could leave you a message. I liked it when you came to my school this week. Me and my dad did the word search puzzle you guys left for us. It was fun. I didn't know that about sucking on tobacaco that makes people spit brown slime and makes them get cancer in their mouth and a black tounge. ugh.

My dad says he's glad you wrote your book. Thank you.

Wow! I'm back home now after several weeks travelling through Nova Scotia with a stopover in Ontario on the way back to B.C. I've seen over 12,000 of you and thank you for visiting here and also the private emails I've had from so many of you.

T.C. - I LOVED the snow during the first winter storm you had in Nova Scotia. Inverness and what I saw of Cape Breton Island were very beautiful with a fresh snowfall.

H.A. - thank you for your kind comments. Talking to 700 of you during last class on Friday before a long weekend was a challenge, and you were a most attentive audience.

Bethany and Megan - you should have received a private email from me. Thank you so much for writing.

Angela - I'm sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing your sad story. One good source of videos sending a tobacco-free message is in the U.S. You might want to ask one of your teachers or your librarian to help you. The "Mind If I Smoke - Care If I Die" poster is also available in tee-shirts, very reasonably priced. Email me privately if you would like more information. In future visits I have a brand new Canadian-made video entitled "Deadly Chew" addressing the alarming increase in use of spit tobacco which some are fooled into believing is safer than smoking.

Click here for information about videos sending a tobacco-free message.

Click here to order free Christy Turlington posters.

Vee - Loved your message! I enjoyed the visit to Toronto, not a million miles away from where I used to go to school. Didn't even mind the snow! Congratulations on a smart move not to start smoking and thanks for your kind words - also for the good question you asked during the Q & A time.

C.H. - With so many of you having to board a bus back to your own school, time did run out quickly, didn't it? Good for your Dad, and good for YOU, for your decision not to smoke.

Chris - good question! The light/mild scam is currently being addressed in a Quebec courtroom because the claims are false that a so-called light cigarette is somehow not as dangerous to smoke. These things take time, and eventually the truth prevails.

Stacy - Thank you for writing! Glad you liked the tar-jar. That is most peoples' favourite, too. Pretty awful, huh?

Thanks again to you all. Our first group of Project Moving Target Tobacco Awareness Peer Mentors finishes up this week with the third of their three scheduled visits to elementary schools. We have more elementary schools requesting Peer Mentors than we have Peer Mentors to send, and another team will be completing the preparation classes in January. This pilot effort has exceeded the hopes of all of us - students, teachers and those younger children who didn't want our mentors to leave! A pizza party and presentation of Certificates of Achievement for our team is scheduled soon and I'll make sure some photos go up on the website.

i really enjoyed the presentation you gave when you came to E.S.D.H.
The videos that you showed really slapped some people in the face and opened their eyes to see that they really aren't invisible to the effects of smoking. The effects from smoking affected my family horribly, and in result my mom lost her mother from cancer and a week later her dad died from the same thing. Sadly, I never had the chance to meet my grandparents because they died before i was born. I do have one question. Where did you find the videos that you showed us?? I would like to be able to show some other people that i love the consequences of smoking! Thank you so much for teaching us the truth!!!

It was good to see you again. I quit smoking and I personally think smoking is all in your mind. If you don't think about it, you won't want one. You think you're supposed to smoke with coffee etc. and when you're stressed. I found it doesn't change your actions if you smoke or not, I mean the nic attacks and stress. It's only a routine.

Thanks to you all for visiting here and leaving your comments. I'm home now after being on the road since late May visiting dozens of schools from elementary to senior secondary and meeting so many of you in person. It's been great! World No Tobacco Day on May 31 is well acknowledged everywhere. I loved the fourth graders' efforts to mark the occasion with their video about the tobacco industry - the knowledge they already have about nicotine addiction and tobacco use is impressive and a compliment to their parents, teachers, Tobacco Reduction Co-Ordinators and healthcare workers.

Part of this tour has involved my first visit to some areas of B.C. and it won't be my last! As usual the best part was meeting so many students, teachers, school administrators and health care professionals working to tell the truth about tobacco. Kick the Nic programme is alive and well and congratulations to all those who have committed to it at all levels. Your welcome was warm and I thank you - also for the private emails I've had. To the public health nurses in Smithers area - thank you for a memorable Sunday and my first "vertical hike"! Whew! The view from the top was was well worth the effort to get there (not to mention the mosquito bites)!

It is great to hear from all of you. I'm sure teachers and students alike are counting the days 'till summer holidays.

Have a great summer, all!

My daughter attended one of your workshops during your recent visit to northern B.C. and I wanted to thank you for giving it. I'm sorry I didn't hear you speak, but from what she has told me the kids just loved you.

She has struggled with smoking since she was twelve and what we (her parents) have told her hasn't been enough for her to make the serious effort to stop. After your presentation, hearing about Project SCUM and how one tobacco company thinks dead smokers are good for the economy - and especially after seeing that tar jar - she has not had a cigarette in two weeks. She's never been able to go that long before.

Thank you, Georgina. Keep up the wonderful work you do.

Hello, everyone - and thanks for leaving a message. Noreen, you are absolutely right. How long are we going to do this??? (let's direct that question to Gordon Campbell and Colin Hansen!).

Linda, Jon and Andy - thanks for your kind words. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the radio slots, and there's some more on the way out of province.

Beth, I hope to visit Alberta before too long. Thank you for writing.

Sue, I'm so sorry we didn't get to talk! Radio producers have to stick to unforgiving schedules and when time runs out, that's it. Thanks for calling in and maybe we'll be luckier next time.

Fran in White Rock - thank you for your kind comments. While too many (one is too many) young people fall for tobacco's false promises and lies, take heart. The quit rate for the 20-somethings is encouraging. One young lady in high school after attending one of my workshops announced to the class at the end of it "I just quit smoking". She was so angry with how the tobacco cartel have taken us all for fools she said she was not going to give them one more penny. I was talking to her teacher last week, and three months on she has still not smoked another cigarette.

For anyone who has missed the updates on my website, I'll include a link below to the Imperial Tobacco book order story. A press release went out on CanadaWire the day before the book launch announcing time, place etc. Early morning (7:10 a.m.) the day of the book launch, Imperial Tobacco phoned the publisher's office to order three copies of You Are The Target.

We were all agreed we want no tobacco money and while we have no control over Imperial Tobacco purchasing as many books as they want to through Chapters or Great Canadian Bookstores who stock the book, there is no way we will sell to them directly.

BUT - we sent them a complimentary copy, since they are interested. Before sending it we had a quickie poll "What Would You Like To Say To Imperial Tobacco?" and the response in a few short days was overwhelming. Here's a link to the results:

Click here to see the results of What Would You Like To Say To Imperial Tobacco? poll

Best wishes to everyone and thanks again for visiting!

Haven't read your book yet but saw an article in the newspaper about it...thanks for putting so much time & effort into trying to educate/warn our gullible youth - the tobacco industry seems to prey on the "I know everything" age group, taking full advantage of their naivete and desperate attempts at conformity with their peers (and rebellion against their parents). It is increasingly important to reach these kids at the elementary level...and even earlier! I commend your tremendous dedication to this end! THANK YOU (non-smoking mother of a smoker - who in her teens said, "Oh Mum, I can quit whenever I want"...well, she's wanted to for several years and so far has not been successful - my hopes are that someday she will beat the habit and that herchildren will not succumb to this addiction!)
