CHAPTER 25
Genesis 25:1-10 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. 2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim. 4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. 5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac. 6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country. And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years. 8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people. 9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; 10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
Abraham would have been 130 + years old when he marries Keturah. It is hard for modern man to relate to the procreation drive in a man as old as Abraham. Verse 6, if taken at face value, shows that not only did Abraham father children by Ketura but also by his concubines unless by concubines is meant only Hagar the mother of Ishmael and Keturah here in this passage. This could very well be the case. Keturah is called Abraham's concubine in 1 Chron. 1:32 and of course Hagar the Egyptian woman was his concubine who bore Ishmael to Abraham.
Isaac is the sole heir of Abraham just as Jesus Christ is the sole heir of God the Father. As Rebekah inherits through her marriage to Isaac so will the Church inherit all things (1 Peter 1:3-5) through the Church's marriage to Jesus.
After Abraham's marriage to Keturah he lives approximately 40 more years and dies at the age of 175. God has devoted a little over 12 chapters in the Bible to this man and his life. He was the principle Patriarch of the Jewish people who counted him as the father of nation and faith.
Of the death of Abraham it is described in this fashion: "Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people". We should take note that he gave up the ghost before he was gathered to his people. The gathering to his people was a reference to his burial in the ground he purchased from the sons of Heth. It was where he had buried Sarah and where Isaac and Jacob would be buried. Today it would be likened to a family burial plot. The important thing to notice is that the soul (ghost) leaves the body at death. In Genesis 35:18 Rachel's "soul was in departing" as she was dying but her body was buried later. This is an important truth to consider as the soul goes immediately to it's reward of heaven or hell to be reunited with the body for final judgment at a later time. In Luke 16 the rich man, Lazarus and Abraham were all in the "soul state" yet were very much alive while their bodies were in the earthly grave. Jesus body lay in a borrowed tomb while His soul was in the heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights. (Matt. 12:40 with Eph. 4:8-10) The apostle Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 5:8 "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." Paul's understanding was that if he died he immediately entered into the presence of his Saviour.
Truly the life of Abraham is an inspiring example of the walk of faith that God looks for in all His people. To be able to trust God completely with all that is held dear is a walk of faith indeed.
