Author: Give me the honest truth - should we wait until she has a real gown?
Subject: Need to know the honest truth:

I posted this on the TXP Board and got no response I need to know if an 8 yr. old is going to be embarassed and laughed off the stage at the Dallas Expo if she competes in white satin long flower girl dress with beading and appliques? It is her first pageant and I want it to be a good experience not humiliating.

If the dress is well fitting I think it should be ok!

The dress does fit well and white is a nice with her tan and blond hair. Thanks - she has went and watched several local pageants and says she wants to do them. She even practices at my house exspecialy with one of my crowns on but she is very shy and needs a great burst of confidence. And to me that's the best thing a pageant can do for any girl.

[> There are going to be glitzy kids at the expo with this dress I would only do All American family and Queens of the USA. -- At Queens last weekend a sunday dress beat a beautiful pageant dress., 06:48:40 04/25/02 Thu

[> [> [> Queens and AAF don't judge the garment. They judge on fit and age appropiate. My daughter beat a gorgous pageant dress at AAF nationals because she was having fun and was confident in what she was wearing. The same goes for Queens, they want to see a child having fun. There have been several times in many different systems that kids in Sunday best have beaten kids in pageant dresses because of personality and other things. -- Stephanie Jackson, 10:37:20 04/25/02 Thu

Actually, I did see a few people answer on the TX board. Anyhow, I think you would enjoy Expo and learn a lot. However, personally I wouldn't go in with high expectations because we went last year to expo, Queens of USA even, as our very first pageant in a dress similar to what you're describing and came in dead last. It was probably a combination of not knowing how to model, bad hair/makeup by Mom (LOL!) and wrong dress. This isn't to discourage you but you wanted the truth! LOL! No matter when/where/how your first pageant is, I think most would agree you'll make a lot of mistakes. It's just part of the learning process. Good luck and have a great time!

Yes I did get one reply on the TX Board but nothing like this! Thanks lady's for all the input. I am not a newbie to pageants, she is, and ofcourse each state has different systems and expectations. I always think the girl "wins" if she does her best not matter what so I do expect this 8 year old to "win" and that means doing her very best no matter what the outcome. I don't care if she crowns or not I just want her to feel good about herself and enjoy being beautiful inside and out. That will be hard if she's not even on the same level due to the dress. But I just can't see spending the money if she really doesn't have fun and enjoy it. But by not letting her at least try I feel I'll be holding her back. I hope others have been stuck between this rock and hard place too.....?

[> The honest truth is that it depends which pageant you enter. If you enter a glitz pageant then part of the score IS based on whether the gown is in the right style, color, hem length, designer, quantity of stones and all of that. If you enter a natural pageant like All American Family the clothes won't count at all as long as they fit well & look well on her. If you enter Queens of the USA clothes won't count for much either. But ask the director of each pageant what they are looking for & you'll get the BEST answers. -- No name, 09:43:03 04/25/02 Thu

[> [> I think the trend is starting to change. You are seeing more and more pageants that have less scoring on the actually clothes and more on the child. You can now do pageants that have sunday type dresses and casualwear pageants and still enjoy pageantry without having lots of money invested in your wardrobe. -- No name, 13:41:47 04/25/02 Thu

[> [> [> I don't know about the trends in child pageants but it has changed drasticaly in the Miss and teen divisions. Haven't you noticed the lack of beading and more glamorous flowing - unpretenious styles? -- Great point - I hope it continues, 13:50:09 04/25/02 Thu
