Subject: Throttle Position Sensor ---- What was legal is now illegal!!!!

Well, here is some interesting news from the NMMA message board!

"Throttle Position Sensors -- Joe Smiley EVP:
It has been brought to our attention that some cars are being found in Tech. that have the TPS pluged off with
silicone and is not operated by the throttle shaft.
I have talked with Dean Hathman WVP and Pat McGrath President and we all agree that in the STOCK CLASSES this
sensor is part of the STOCK CARB.and must remain operational. It must also remain on the Carb.not wired into
the wiring loom.
Thanks Joe Smiley EVP SVP"

I remember when this originally came up - in fact, Delty Winfrey and I were the Tech men at SSMC (2000 or 2001) at the time. We found a Throttle Position Sensor missing on an A-Class car and we honestly did not know if that was legal or not so we put the race results on HOLD and discussed this with NMMA officials. It was deemed "LEGAL" to not run the TPS - if had to be present, but didn't need to be working (or hooked up to the harness).

Then a few years later another ruling reenforcing the above ruling was denoted by the WVP of the NMMA. Apparently, we did not write down these rules interpretations back then; thus, we are in a mess right now!

So, if you have a non-working TPS (unhooked or missing), or you have locked your TPS with silicone or you use an Odum TPS plate - I guess you are now illegal and you can bet that this will be checked this weekend at SSMC.

The TPS really does not affect our cars much since we are usually at half to full open throttle anyway. I have run carburetors both ways and I did not see any difference in performance. All I know is a TPS is an expensive item that the Yamaha Dealers do NOT often have in stock (weeks to get) and they tend to go bad often.

I suggest the NMMA membership get with our NMMA officials and let them know what you think about this situation (remember this is happening about ONE WEEK before the Nationals!!!).

Bill
