You have to have a proper photo connection, like a magazine or publication and go through the publicity/press people at the record label first to get a photo pass, otherwise there's not much hope of doing that unless you know the band(s) anyway. I've managed to get photo passes straight from tour managers, but these were guys I'd met before and they knew my photos were used for proper purposes and for popular websites and for promo photos for fan club members.
These days, with great small digital camera models, you don't even need a photo pass to get great shots. You can smuggle cameras into venues easily and get good photos without being in the pit. There aren't many female photographers around, though. Many times I've been in the pit and I've been the only girl there. I often spot half-dressed chicks hanging around by the side of the stage looking like they need to get laid and they wouldn't have the patience to bother taking photos or doing anything of any interest to help promote the bands at all.
I admit I do enjoy partying and hanging out with the bands, but I get fed up of these sluts who take advantage and look down on others, it's just jealousy and most of the time they can't stand to see any potential 'competition'.
