It's not dead, but I'd say it's definitely changed and for some reason in today's musical climate considered more "taboo." I can't understand why, other than for the fact the bands that play today (for the most part) are a bunch of pussy bitches. You know, so much of it's emo. But I play in a punk band and my husband's a rock star and I still see TONS of groupies around. I kind of like it, so long as the girls are very clear about their intentions. So much of these chicks today come off like they're there for a more "ligit" purpose, like to "photograph the band," or to "interview the band," or whatever because they don't want to admit why they're really there... That's whack. I like to see groupies dressed slutty and making no amends about their purpose, I'd say that groupie culture is more rare today than that of the '80s or '70s for sure.
