I get there as early as I possibly can. Basically, I plan to spend my entire day at the venue. Sometime between 10am and 1pm is what I aim for.
Sometimes the band will be there early in the morning, and other times(if their hotel is just a few blocks away for instance), they won't show up until closer to soundcheck.
The earlier it is, the better your chances are of meeting/hanging out with them. The band I follow hangs around outside behind the venue a lot. They are easier to approach, and probably more willing to talk to you, if you're not one of 50 other people waiting for your chance. Things are really chill when it's early and the crowds of people haven't arrived yet. And I haven't been to a show where I haven't had a good time and made friends with the other "earlybirds". This one guy had me laughing so hard at everything he said - I think I had more fun waiting in line with him than I did during the actual show! If you're lucky, you might also get some special treatment from the venue staff. I went to a show last year in Arizona. It was a HOT HOT day and the venue had no shade whatsoever - For the longest time it was just me and one other girl and we had been sitting by the doors for a few hours. A woman who was working in the venue opened the door and asked us if we wanted to go inside to cool off. Unfortunately the band hadn't arrived yet. LOL. She did say I'd let you meet the band but they're not here. It was nice anyway and we got to wander around inside and stay cool. It's a good time to make friends with ANYONE who might be able to get you backstage.
There are a lot advantages to being the only one there, as opposed to just being a random face in a mob of people waiting outside.
