If I was you, I would begin with Unit 3 - Colonization of the New World - Week 14 is about the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving. I would study Weeks 12-14 in November.

I truly think you could do the Native American and Exploration units at any time, even as Units 5 & 6. I think Unit 1 can be a stand alone unit - you are really just studying different Indian groups. I also think this Unit alone could take an entire semester! There is such great information out there - I think we may go back and dive deeper into the Indians at a later day, maybe even next summer. I'd like to plant the "three sisters" in the spring, etc.

Unit 2 (Explorers) covers the time period before colonization and I think it could also stand alone because it doesn't talk in depth about the colonies.

I honestly think that kids are VERY adaptable and you can jump around a bit without messing things up. If you want to study Thanksgiving in the spring, then it just won't tie in as well with the season. After the December holiday season, you could go back and begin with Unit 1 - when you get to the Pilgrims, just do a quick review and move on. We are not a nature walk family, so we didn't do any of that while studying Native Americans - we went to a Cherokee exhibit (even though Cherokees are not mentioned at all in Patchwork Primers!) at a local hands-on museum, we read tons of books and focused on nature in our backyard. I think you could study Native Americans during the winter and just tie in the season with your studies. The science study would be very interesting during the winter time - plants and animals during winter are totally different than during the summer! You could do a compare & contrast sort of thingy!

This is just how I would handle it ... one of the reasons we began our studies early was so that we would be finishing up Unit 3 around Thanksgiving - I just wanted it all to tie in and mean more to my kids!
Kris
