We just began using Patchwork Primers, Vol. 1 this past Tuesday. This is our first time using a unit study and I'm really enjoying it! The best thing about it is that I can adapt it any way I see fit to suit my children. It definitely works well with a Charlotte Mason homeschool as the author has included a lot of nature study and her lessons are short and varied, touching on many subjects including Art, Music, etc. All you really need is a couple of trips to the library each month to pick out books that go along with your weekly studies and you're set!

My children do not like the CM nature studies (i.e. nature walks, drawing nature, etc.) and I prefer a more in-depth approach to the Science, so I am using several other sources for teaching science. I use PPrimers as a springboard for what to cover during each unit. As I said before, you can adapt the study to YOUR family! For example, I have expanded the 6-week first unit on Native Americans to 8 weeks because there is so much great information to cover! We will cover Botany in 4 weeks and will go over more than is written into the unit because my children LOVE learning facts. We will cover all of the info that Sharon has written into PPrimers, but just in a different way using a workbook-type book available at Wal-Mart and some wonderful Usborne books we already owned. The Animal study in Unit 1 I will expand to cover more info on insects and birds because my children really love studying "creatures" (as they call them!).

I do understand your concern about getting motivated and sticking with it. I think that that is a common concern for MANY homeschoolers no matter what kind of curriculum they use! I have chosen to have us make lapbooks (also known as shutter books) using the Dinah Zike resouce books, Big Book of Books and Big Book of Projects. So far, it is going great! The children are learning lots of wonderful information and putting it together in a hands-on fashion so the info is really sinking in. Plus, after our studies, there will be a nice visual record of their work and something they can pull out again and again and re-read and review.

Did you look at the Scope and Sequence and Sample Lessons that Sharon has put on her website? They might help you a bit in deciding if PPrimers will work for you. I have to say that I am sold on the unit study method and will continue to use it the entire time we homeschool. It really is a fun way to learn!
