My daughter's '91 Accord recently experienced a similar event. I also happened to be riding with her at the time, and noticed a slight electrical burning odor (which was helpful piece of information narrowing it down to an electrical problem).
While driving and stopping at a red light, the car stalled. She started it fine, and we proceeded.
Further down the road, when approaching another light, it stalled again. Here I noticed the slight electrical burning odor. She started it again and we continued.
Further down the road (we were almost home), as we slowed at the bottom of an offramp, it stalled for the final time. Would not restart.
Pulled it home, and as Glen suggested, I first suspected the main relay. I removed the relay and tested it with an ohmmeter, but it tested OK, and I detected no burnt odor.
Turned out to be the ignition switch. It tested bad, and when I removed the lower cover from the steering column to access the ignition switch, I saw melted solder in the cover. The internal contacts had apparently deteriorated, and the switch overheated so much that it melted the solder on the terminals. There is a lot of current flowing through the ignition switch.
This was my first ignition switch failure, and I'm not sure if this is a typical symptom, but it continued to work a few times before it completely failed. However, with high current flowing through bad contacts, it won't last long before permanent failure results.
You might ask your mechanic to check out the ignition switch if he has no other thoughts.
Good luck...
Mike
