See, I have a bit of a problem with the church's policy on abortion, because 25-30 yrs ago the policy was much different. President Kimball said, "We have repeatedly affirmed the position of the church in unalterably opposing all abortions" (Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p189).
The 1988 policy was: "There is no excuse for abortion unless the life of the mother is seriously threatened" (Church Principles, p243, 1988)

Now the policy allows for several exceptions. With each change there has been no explanation of why there is a change. Did the Lord reveal that life does not begin at conception? Do the apostles/prophet now have a better understanding of the meaning of mortal of life? I don't know how to judge these changes since there has been no explanation or new teachings.

Jean, the examples you give are good ones. If a woman has a tubal pregnancy she should by all means be treated. A portion of the tube is cut away, along with the baby. Yes, the baby dies, an unhappy consequence of treating the mother's tubal pregnancy. But the baby's body is disposed of without unecessary dessecration.

Pre-eclampsia--yes, you deliver the baby early. Hopefully, medical technology can save the baby's life, but if not you have not deliberately set out to kill the baby.

Here are some links talking about why it's not necessary to abort to save a mother. Just because I say you don't need to abort if the mother's life is threatened it doesn't mean you don't treat the mother--of course you do. And often that treatment will result in the baby's death, but it's unintentional--and that's the key. You don't intend to kill the baby.

In the case of incest, it is almost always the incestor who demands the abortion in order to hide his crime. I have a friend whose father did just that. 25 yrs later she still mourns for those babies (she was carrying twins). I don't know how common her feelings are to all incest victims, but now that she has married and has children she cannot get over what was done to her. It is very, very sad.

Ditto the victim of rape. Some studies show that women who abort after a rape have far more emotional scars from the abortion than they do the rape and have a more difficult time dealing with the rape. Now that's not enough to make law banning abortion in the case of rape/incest, but it is certainly something to consider. It should ar least make us slow down, reconsider this as an option after the crime.

I have a niece who was kidnapped and raped by a neighbor when she was barely 14yo. It was horribly traumatic for her. She was given the medications necessary to prevent implantation. (That's one reason rape should be reported immediately--to have access to this medication.) It was a sad, sad thing for her to have to deal with this. I don't know how she would have dealt with an abortion on top of it. I'm just glad that it never became an issue.
