Cassidy entered the barn. It was Friday afternoon, and the sun shone fiercly. Wiping sweat from her forehead, Cassidy walked over to Gent's stall. The gelding was dozing but he woke and walked over when she spoke his name. "Hot isn't it?" she sighed. The clicking of boots on the ailse made her turn. Jenny strode up. "Why don't you ride down to the lake?" she suggested. "It's burning up!" "Mom, it's too hot to ride!" Cassidy began, but then she changed her mind. "Well, I guess it would be fun to ride to the lake. Is Mel coming?" Please no, she thought silently. She didn't really wanted her sister to tag along...she was planning to go with Jon! "Actually, she is @ home in the swimming pool. She & Princess have a lesson this evening." "Well, ok." Cassidy smiled. "I'll take Gent." "Be careful." Jenny walked off. Cassidy found Jon and he went to get his horse ready. Cassidy led the big Tennesee Walker out and hooked him in crossties. She groomed his silky coat and slipped the bridle on him. Walking horses were so smooth you could ride them bareback for miles. Cassidy didn't need a saddle. She hurried to change out of her school clothes. Cassidy put on a pair of shorts, paddock boots, and a tank top. She pulled her hair into a bun and grabbed her helmet. Then she led the Walker outside in the sunshine. "Hey," Jon said as he walked up. "Bareback?" "Yeah." She climbed onto the mounting block and jumped up on his broad back. With a playful grin she joked, "We could ride double..." Montana butted Jon sharply and Jon swung onto the frisky colt. "Let's go." Cassidy wrapped her legs around Gent's sides and grabbed the reins. She touched her heels to his sides and he surged off down the shady trail in a smooth rack. Montana trotted along beside the stallion.
