The hot summer day had faded to a pleasantly cool evening. Mel and Stephanie jogged over to get their ponies tacked up for the jumping lesson. Princess was grazing at the end of the pasture and she trotted up when Mel called her. "Hey pretty girl," Melanie greeted the 14.3 Arab. She led her to the barn and groomed her quickly, eager to be in the saddle! Princess tossed her head and snorted impatiently as the 12 y/o tacked her up. Melanie put on her helmet & gloves and grabbed a jumping crop. "Steph, are you ready?" she called. "Yeah!" Stephanie appeared leading Spice, who was sleek from his grooming. The 2 Arabs nuzzled each other in greeting. "Ready girls?" Jenny strode over with a smile. She led the way to the jumping arena. It was a grassy paddock with 10 jumps set up. At one end were some caveletti, ground poles, & cross rails, for warmups. The jumps were 3' to 3'-6". Melanie swung into the saddle and gathered the reins. Princess danced beneath her and Melanie sat deep, touching her heels to the Arabian's sides. The dapple gray surged into a light canter. They circled the paddock warming up. Then both girls halted their ponies. "Ok, Mel you first," Jenny said. "Warm up at a trot & canter, then begin the course." Jenny pointed out the pattern to the girls then stepped back. Princess tossed her head playfully and strode into a swift canter. Melanie tugged on the reins and slowed her to a trot. They skimmed over the warmups and THEN they cantered to the first jump. All of the pretty fences were brightly painted. The little Arab bounded over the jump. Melanie landed softly, closing her fingers on the reins and swinging her to the left. They surged over the jumps, Princess tucking her slender legs beneath her and flying over the obstacals. Melanie was in heaven as she cleared the last jump with room to spare. She tugged on the reins and brought the mare down to a trot. Mel posted over to Jenny and halted the mare. "Well?" she asked breathlessly. "Wonderful!" Jenny said with a pleased smile. "You 2 are working wonderful together! How did she feel?" "Light and smooth!" Melanie replied happily. Jenny nodded. "You know why? Because you were riding very lightly, using your seat, legs, and hands. Your hands were nice and quiet and you weren't bouncing around in the saddle. Good job. Apply a little more leg before the bounce, she hesitated. Ok, Steph ready?"
