Jenny was talking to Lauren on the phone. "Anyways, we'll be gone for a little bit, I just need you to work my horses." "Of course, I'll be glad to," Jenny replied. She scribbled down what each horse needed in their workout and then hung up. Melanie and Cassidy were sitting on the couch watching t.v. The family had just finished dinner. "Lauren & her family are going away for a few days. She asked me to work the horses. I was thinking you guys could help?" It wasn't really a suggestion, both girls knew it was a command. They looked up. "That would be fun!" Melanie agreed, eyes sparkling. Cassidy nodded eagerly too, then paused. "Whoa, wait. And mucking the stalls? Cleaning tack too?" Jennifer put her hands on her hips. "YES. Cassidy, you always think about the negative stuff." "Sorry," Cassidy grinned sheepishly. "I'd love to ride the horses though mom," she added. Melanie threw a pillow at her sister. "Well, we'll do it tomorrow," Jennifer told her daughters.
SATURDAY @ THE BARN...
"She has 3 horses to be ridden and she wants the foal to be played with," Jennifer said as she & her 2 daughters walked down the clean ailse. "Mel, you get Spice, Cassidy get out Appeal & I will ride Heartbreaker."
Melanie had ridden Spice before. He was a lot like her own pony. Both were Arabians. Her horse was 14.3, while Spice was 14.2, so there was practically no diffrence in height. Melanie groomed the cute pony up and then tacked him up. He stood calmly, watching her curiously. Where's Stephanie? He seemed to ask. "Your owner will be back in a few days," Mel cooed. "I'm riding you today." She gave him a soft kiss on the nose and mounted up. Melanie rode Spice down a trail to the cross country course. They cantered around the course, clearing the obstacals easily. Spice then galloped through a pasture, jumped a creek, and trotted back to the barn. "Have a good ride?" Jenny asked. She was tacking up Heartbreaker. "Yeah!" Melanie said. "He is very responsive, but he doesn't jump as springy as Princess!" She dismounted and gave him a bath, then fed him a treat & turned him out.
Jennifer mounted Heartbreaker and rode into the indoor arena, away from the bright sunshine and distracting noises. For over an hour she worked with the spirited Thoroughbred in dressage. By the end of the training session, the mare was dark with sweat. She had become more collected, responsive, and fluid. Jenny could feel the improvement as they walked out of the ring and back to the barn. The mare halted at the slightest tug of the reins. Jenny dismounted and took the saddle off. She hooked her in cross ties and gave her a bath. Heartbreaker nickered when she saw the apple in Jenny's hand. "Here ya go sweetie," Jennifer murmered, give her the treat. She turned her out and walked over to the outdoor arena, where Cassidy was riding Appeal.
The mare was being ridden western. Cassidy, who normally rode saddleseat, was adjusting to the change. Jenny hadn't put Mel up there b/c she wanted a more expirenced rider for the frisky young filly. The Quarter horse danced around, throwing playful bucks. Cassidy sat deep in the sloping western saddle. The reins were gathered in her right hand, and she was asking the filly to perform easy exercises. Jenny watched. Cassidy made Appeal to transitions, circles, half circles, figure eights, flying lead changes, and half passes. They also cantered between a few poles. The mare, after nearly 2 hours, was responsive and attentive. She had learned a lot from her expert rider in that time and was behaving beautifully.
After the session, Mel & Cassidy bathed her and then Jenny said, "Ok, go get Vicky & her foal. Have fun," she added, flashing them a grin. "Oh we will!" Melanie exclaimed. She & Cassidy raced to the paddock. Cassidy slid the halter over Prince's tiny little head while Melanie put Victory's halter on. They led them up to the barn and groomed them. Cassidy would touch his leg and say "hoof" then pick it up and reward him. This was teaching Prince to raise his hoof everyime he heard this command. Then Cassidy walked Prince around the ring while Melanie lunged his dam. Then they turned them out in the paddock, playing tag with the adorable colt. After lunch, they went to ride their own horses.
