Perhaps it's different in Canada, but smokers are taxed individually. I just saw an ad for cigarettes--they sell for over $7 a pack here now (so there must be a good $5 in taxes, I'd think). The rationale is that smokers cost us money, so we tax them to pay for the added costs they incur.

It's interesting that my desire to see prostitution legalised is for the exact same reason you want to keep it illegal--to protect women.

There is a reason it's called the world's oldest profession. It's here to stay. It will never be considered a legitimate profession, but I do think that women deserve the protection of society by decriminalising it and regulating it.

Your suggestion, that we help women get out of the sex trade, is a valid one, too. In my mind, we can do this much better if we're allowing the customers to subsidise the costs for this.
