I think you could protect it, and redesign with safety/evacuation features. But I see your point, sure.

Yes, I lived in Jersey City back in '96-'97, and the towers--far more than the rest of Manhattan's skyline--looked like they loomed out of OUR side of the Hudson. Take that away, and the NYC skyline is rather pedestrian (though closer up, the Chrysler building is perhaps my favourite skyscraper aesthetically).
