Subject: Plastic surgery

Ok, I caught a bit of that stupid TLC show on people who've had some form of cosmetic surgery done today... Personal Stories or something, it's called.

The woman was 31 and a ballet dancer, and she looked fine to me... she'll never be a supermodel because she's a little too Rubensesque, but she is healthy and attractive. She has a partner who cares for her, and a daughter who is a real little spark.

But she also works in a plastic surgeon's office, and she hates her body (I mean HATES it... I was shocked by the extent of her loathing... she made a comment about the whole state not having enough suction to get rid of her fat. She was NOT fat!!!)

So she had liposuction done.

Now, my immediate thought was that she needed a psychologist, not a plastic surgeon. That maybe she's got self esteem issues she should work on.

But I know I have moments where I look at myself and just condemn myself, and for things I can't even change necessarily (I could certainly change my waistline more than I bother to!)

So, is plastic surgery for the vain or those with low self esteem? Or is it an appropriate response to being unhappy with the physical appearance, much as we might exercise or eat better or do other things to look good?

Astrid
