Subject: Churches advocating "Vote Pro-Life"

Yesterday I saw the message board at the church where dh and I used to be parishoners, and it said "Vote Pro-Life Nov. 5." This appalled me for these reasons:

1) A church, as a tax-exempt religious organization, probably ought not meddle in politics quite so blatantly (e.g., endorse certain issues or candidates)

2) But, if they do advocate political positions, it should be with an eye toward the overall philosophy of the church, not just one issue. The pro-life thing is a perfect example. Yes, the Catholic Church is pro-life, but overall, its social justice philosophy is *extremely* liberal. By advocating pro-life voting, they're asking parishoners to ignore the vast body of Church philosophy on social justice.

3) As an extension of #2, most so-called "pro-life" candidates are not even in a position to address the abortion issue....but they ARE in positions to affect other legislation that more often than not makes life for single mothers, poor mothers, and working-class families more difficult (perhaps setting the stage for more abortions, even)....welfare, insurance, family leave, you name it!

To me, a "pro-life" candidate is one who cares about what happens to these unborn babies after they are born, too! The conservative agenda doesn't really mesh with that idea, though--they just want women to stop having abortions, and to hell with what happens to the family afterward (unless the mom can pull herself "up by her bootstraps" or something, ugh).

Anyway, I wanted to call the parish and have a word with the priest, but he's such a jerk (hence we are no longer members) that I am sure he wouldn't care.

Jen
