You're going to learn!

You don't have to have it all figured out right now - or ever, really. 100 percent of my friends who went to college and got degrees (twenty-odd years ago) are not now living the lives they envisioned back then. Not that their lives are bad, necessarily. But not one of them is doing anything that bears even a passing relationship with their college majors.

Give the ACT your best shot. If you don't score high enough, at least you'll know what you need to work on for the next time you take the test. Then get your driver's license and take some classes at a Junior College for a while if there is one near where you live. The credits will be transferable. And as you experience things there you might see that your original plans were going to lead you down a path you would not have liked. There is an old Middle-Eastern saying, "No matter how far you have gone in the wrong direction, it's never too late to start walking in the right one." I've had the opportunity to converse with many people that this society considers incredibly successful, and they all say they have failed much more often than they succeeded, but the so-called "failures" have taught them the lessons that were the foundations for their success. Don't worry about the outcome - just get busy with the process of life, and be open to abrupt changes in direction. Don't grasp too tightly to any particular perspective or belief - even your dreams are malleable.

Nothing in life, even college applications, is written in stone. It's not a black and white world; there are not only shades of gray but millions of colors also. This many options makes life confusing and not a little bit scary, but when we give up the words "fail" and "can't" and "but what if..." we find the road of life wide enough to accomodate many things, pleasures and pains. You may have chosen a vanilla ice cream cone right now in this moment, but there's always later when you can try chocolate. Limits are only imaginary lines that we ourselves draw. As the minister that mentored me often reminded us: there are only three rules in life - 1) Eat when you're hungry 2) Sleep when you're tired 3) Try not to hurt anyone. Oh, and, "Live every day as if it were your last, because one day you'll be right!"

ANd I apologize for insulting your family with my poor attempt at finding humor in the situation. That was not my intention, and it really speaks to the difficulty of written humor and conveying nuance.

Keep on keeping on,
Joe
