Subject: OMG. Yes...my heart *totally* goes out to A. Nikodinov and her family. How tragic! I caught only bits and pieces of the coverage. Did she even skate? As for Weiss...

I haven't been excited by anything he's done since that Bronze at worlds a few years back. I guess he'll always be one of those skaters that never quite made it at the international level. A fate that I am thinking is more and more likely for Sandhu. For all his successes Sandhu hasn't placed higher than 8th at Worlds/Olympics!

I think you are being just a *tad* too harsh with your pairs...Ina & Zimmerman were awesome! I don't know if they would have been able to crack any higher than bronze considering who their competition was at the time, but they were certainly not duds like the recent crop of American and Canadian pairs. I think the current generation will never crack top 5 internationally, though they are fun to watch.

But we'll see, Worlds is close and next year is an Olympic year...weird things happen in Olympic years :)

Craziness is the norm for Olympic years. Who knows what will happen. I mean, who'd have thought that Michelle Kwan would be beaten in *both* of her trips to the Olympics?? By fellow Americans no less.

And I don't mean that the US has never had a decent pair...Ina & Zimmerman did well but they were certainly not the best in the world. We had Babilonia & Gardner...of course they had Olympic troubles. Meno & Sand weren't bad. And Peter & Kitty Carruthers too. But these are certainly the exceptions for US pairs...we've never had a shot against the Soviet/Russian teams. The emphasis just isn't there. We're a singles country: Carol Heiss, Dick Button, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Debi Thomas, Tonya Harding, Kristi Yamaguchi, Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski, Sasha Cohen, Sarah Hughes, Todd Eldredge, etc. and many others that I'm sure I've forgotten to include. Our focus is the individual and until that changes, we'll never have a strong presence in pairs...and especially not dance. Dance will never be popular in the US for one major reason: no big jumps. It's not "exciting" enough for us. Fourteen year olds attempting quads, yes, but waltzing 20-somethings, not a chance. They just don't have the following.

I mean - I remember the 1988 olympics because I HATED Katerina Witt because I LOVED Debbie Thomas!!! The funny thing now is that if Katerina is on a skating show, I love her, because I can now accept her as a member of the "old school"

My favorite ice skater would have to be a tie between Scott Hamlton and Brian Boitano (whom still has flowy shirts refered to as Brian Boitano shirts in this household, despite the fact that he himself probably hasn't worn one in 10 years)

I liked Kristi Yamaguchi and Michelle Kwan at their perspective times, but... I don't know - they don't excite me much anymore... (and I did like some of the guys during their times, but not enough to even remember names)

what I really didn't like, was I never could like Tara Lipinski - I think it was her makeup - anyway she drove me up the wall - and the most recent girl - she's ok too, but just nothing there to make me like her...

so I don't tend to watch the regular competition figure skating anymore... if its on I might a little, but...

Give me a skating special with Scott, Brian, Paul Wylie, Katerina Witt, and I'd even add Katia (since she did some solo pro stuff after her husband died)

Oh, and while I do like ice dancing, I don't think it was ever on enough in my youth for me to remember names... same way with doubles figure skating - I do remember when Kristi Yamaguchi was still doing doubles and single
