  • I know! I've got a GREAT New Year's resolution for you guys. Hatch out some of Lu's chickens! LOLOL!!! I was at basketball practice tonight w/ the children going on and on to this other mom about my chickens. Then this other lady started asking me about them and then another! LOL!   • Our school had a private screening last wednesday. I loved it, just like you said, only a few additions that I felt were additions, not just annoying extras.   • It has been a while since I've read the book, and I didn't want to read it ahead of time or I'd find things to nitpick. So I didn't notice plot differences like I do with Harry Potter (hate the movies because I love the books so much). Anyway--I thought it was evenly and leisurely paced and could be considered slow if you're not in the mood for leisurely. I loved the girls--fantastic actors! Ed annoyed me, but he was supposed to. I thought the CGI stuff was fantastic and I'm glad they waited to do the movie because it wouldn't have worked a few years ago. Heard/read somewhere there might be a sequel - the other book that has all 4 kids in it, so they can film it before the kids grow up too much.   Now you can see anyone's Driver's License on the Internet, including your own! I just searched for mine and there it was picture and all. And as much as I dislike my picture, I am sure I don't need it plastered on the internet!
  
  I removed mine; you might want to do the same. Go to the website and check it out. Just enter your Name, City and State to see if yours is on file. After your license comes on the screen, click the box marked "Please Remove". This will remove it from public viewing, but not from law enforcement.

  It seems I've discovered a "lump" where no lump should be. I have tests scheduled for next week(!) and then they said it would be at least another week before they know if it's cancer. I'd much appreciate your prayers, specifically that it not be cancer and also that I not become too stressed out with the waiting.

• It's Sara and C's Movie Review Hut!!! Film Festival Edition!! ~dun dun dun~ Hey don't turn that channel!!....Tonight's entry: Just Like Heaven -- Sara Ebert & C Roper, 22:40:09 09/17/05 Sat [3]
  They came...dressed in the finest silken fabrics. With yellow flowers in their hair and a dress cut down to there...oops wrong train of thought.
  
  C interjects: Hey--feel free to take that train, if I can't have a figure on the internet, then I'll never get one!
  
  The red carpet was bustling with celebs, agents, and “yes”-people. Sara caught Reese’s eye and gave her a wave while C conversed flirtingly with Mark Ruffalo (his wife was not there). With only one minor incident involving some misplaced paparazzi cameras and Bruce Willis, the two glamorous movie critics finally made it into the theater for the premiere of Just Like Heaven starring their good friends Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo.
  
  C: “I want cheese popcorn”
  
  Sara: “Fine fine, whatever, just don’t wipe your hands on that dress. We’re returning it tomorrow!”
  
  C: “Oh, Sara, your tag is sticking out!”
  
  Sara: “Thanks, that was a close one.”
  
  They made it to their seats after C had gotten her cheesy goodness. The lights dimmed and previews came on: Rent, Elizabethtown, Prime, and Wallace & Gromit. C got in trouble for throwing popcorn at the screen during that last one. Then the movie began. (come inside for synopsis and reviews, and for a good chuckle)

• Sara's Move Review Hut!! Episode 3: Return of the Lunatic...This week's entry: Valiant -- Sara Ebert, 11:47:09 09/17/05 Sat [3]
  Disclaimer: These are merely my own opinions, please do not flame me, unfriend me, give me a wedgie or anything similar, but do feel free to try and change my mind. I am not affiliated with any movie reviewer or studio.
  
  So I'm back everyone with another fun movie review for you all. ~crickets~ Please try to contain your enthusiasm...Okay so here's the backstory. Last night (Thursday) I took my Little Sister to see Valiant at the multi-plex (mainly because it was the only G-rated movie playing and I refuse to take this 7 year old to anything else no matter how much she pleads) So without further ado, here we go with my review of Valiant.
  
  Quickie synopsis:
  Taking place in Europe during WWII, this cinderella story about messenger pidgeons focuses on Valiant, a runt of a pidgeon who desperately wants to become homing pidgeon for the Allied Forces. He teams up with a group of quirky but rather dim-witted messengers and they find themselves right in the thick of things after they are recruited as the final hope of getting an urgent message from the French resistance to the Allies.
  
  Little Sis's take:
  She liked it. Thought it was really funny.
  
  And what you came here for...My take:
  Okay...I do admit that Valiant was cute in a "never really want to see it again" kind of way. It was fun while is lasted, but I'm sure I'll forget half the plotline by afternoon today. It was unoriginal and predictable, and while most of the time I don't mind predictable, this movie just didn't make any sort of lasting impact on me. I guess with me the only time predictable will work is with romantic comedies.
  
  Another con of Valiant. This movie is a strange mix of kid humor and adult historical references. It is very hard to determine just what audience they were going for here. I know my Little Sis said she liked it, but I just know from looking at her face that a lot of the war references (i.e. Allies and Normandy) just went right over her head. Kids her age know very little to nothing of WWII so I fear the movie lost a little of it's kid appeal there. And what the kids find funny is almost sure to turn the adults off in return (Sorry, regurgitated worm and fart jokes just lose their humor as you get older) These are just not easy genres to mix, kids movies and WWII movies, and I think it showed in Valiant.
  
  Valiant wasn't a disappointment (I wasn't really expecting much from it in the first place) but overall the only possible way you'll go see this movie is if you have a kid who wants to see it. Even then it's almost not really worth the $12.00 you paid to get both yourself and child in. See it if you must (you'll live through it, trust me) but avoid if you can. Overall, I give Valiant 2.5/5 iced teas with funky little umbrellas in them.

  • I don't know what the new shows are yet. I can tell you I got all wrapped up in this show called "Fallen" the other night on this weird foreign channel I found. You never know what's coming on... and a lot of the time it is not in English. ANYWAY, this was about this amnesiac cop and was really interesting. I was all wrapped up in it when it said, "TO BE CONTINUED." Well... I wrote down the day and time I THOUGHT it might come back on... but.. then forgot. I've been checking for it, but... Sigh. I used to watch FOX news for breakfast every morning and O'Reilly in the evening but Katrina has been so upsetting/depressing I can't bare to turn it on anymore. Those poor people. SIgh.       • In general I buy complete curriculums and FOLLOW THEM. LOL! My favorites are A Beka and Bob Jones. I also (in the last couple of years) have used some video courses for my middle daughter. These work well but you have to stay on top of it AND make sure your child is participating. You still have to grade everything and answer any questions your child has, etc. but you don't have to TEACH it. It has worked well when I've used it for my middle daughter but I don't believe will be something I can use for my youngest or for Child O Mine. It's not for everyone.   • I feel a LOT better now! After reading Lu's hysterical scream I don't feel quite so stressed! Our kids had a longer summer because we're starting three weeks later than normal this year, but I'm still not sure if I'm ready. • Sara’s Movie Review Hut! Double Feature edition! ~insert cheesy theme music here~ This week’s entries: In Good Company & The Upside of Anger -- Sara, 00:08:06 08/11/05 Thu [8]
  Disclaimer: These are merely my own opinions, please do not flame me, unfriend me, give me a wedgie or anything similar, but do feel free to try and change my mind. I am not affiliated with any movie reviewer or studio.
  
  Since, this weekend, there just wasn’t really much in the theater that I wanted to see, (Dukes of Hazzard? No. Sky High? Ehhh… Stealth? Groaaann!) I ended up renting a couple comedic dramas to satisfy my movie addict tendencies: In Good Company starring Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, and Scarlett Johansson; and The Upside of Anger starring Joan Allen and Kevin Costner.
  
  We’ll start with IGC:
  Here’s the quickie synopsis:
  
  Dan (Quaid), a middle-aged ad sales exec for a successful sports magazine, finds his life turned upside-down when, in a huge corporate buyout, he finds himself demoted and forced to report to an inexperienced boss half his age, Carter (Grace). Company tensions ignite when Dan finds out that his boss has been seeing his eldest daughter behind his back.
  
  My review:
  
  IGC was entertaining, yes, but would I go and shell out $15 on the DVD? Probably not. Mainly because it scared the bejeezus out of me. I’m a marketing major entering my senior year of college, and this film really seemed to highlight the cutthroat nature of the business. Corporate takeovers, instability, and smarmy guys like Steckle make me want to turn tail and run the opposite direction. Lord, I hope I know what I’m getting myself into…but enough of my personal bias, back to the movie.
  
  The acting was wonderful! IGC did a great job of detailing Dan’s personal struggle to be a good father and a good businessman. It’s hard to put yourself in his shoes when having to deal with being replaced by someone young enough to be your son, but throw in a whirlwind romance between your boss and your daughter and you’re just asking for trouble. But Dan’s not the only one facing upheaval in IGC, we get to look in on Carter’s life as well. The movie attempts and succeeds in showing the honest truth in the characters, flaws and all. None of these characters are perfect; there are no heroes and demons (except maybe Steckle, I still think he is evil incarnate).
  
  I really didn’t find IGC to be predictable at all. Being the “happy movie” buff that I am, when I first watched the ending I found it unsatisfying, but then thinking back I realized that it is a happy ending. Everyone ends up happy so that qualifies as a happy ending. Would I see IGC again? Perhaps if someone I knew wanted to see it, but would I go out of my way to see it again? No. To me, it was a good one-time-viewing type of movie, but otherwise… Something just didn’t sit well with me, again maybe my bias is coming into play. Overall, I give IGC 3/5 iced teas with funky little umbrellas in them.
  
  Now, onto TUoA
  Here’s the quickie synopsis:
  
  After her husband’s total abandonment of her and her four daughters, Terry (Allen) finds her emotions spinning out of control as she struggles to put her shattered life back together with the help of a has-been baseball player and town drunk (Costner) and a bottle of vodka. Meanwhile, her daughters face both turmoil and life changes as they enter into adulthood and deal with “losing” the mother they knew and loved.
  
  My review:
  
  TUoA sat just about as well with me as IGC. It was a very darkly humorous tale, but it was almost painful to watch Terry drink her pain away. I guess that attests to the acting abilities of the stars of the movie. The comedy and the B-storylines of each of the daughters really lift TUoA from “mediocre” to “meh”. I also took a liking to Costner’s character, Denny, as he tries to help them through their pain (and attract the attentions of Terry). Most of the comedy coincides with his scenes.
  
  Again, the acting was excellent, and this would really be a great movie if you are into movies with a pinch of angst, a dollop of dark comedy, and a smidge of heartache. The characters were very much flawed, very human, and that shown through (Hmm…flawed characters? Am I seeing a pattern developing?).
  
  Without going into details, the ending was quite the shocker. Definitely did not see that one coming! It did add an interesting plot twist, but didn’t really seem to mesh well with tone of the rest of the movie. It stuck out and felt like the writers were grasping at straws to find closure for Terry. Would I see TUoA again? No, most likely not. It was an experience and I really don’t regret seeing it, but it just wasn’t my glass of iced tea. Very melodramatic. But if you like that kind of thing, be my guest! I’m sure you’d love it. Overall, I give TUoA 2.5/5 iced teas with funky little umbrellas in them.

  The latest......Lightening damage at my house. Casualties: desktop, laptop, oven, modem, router, dog fence control box. It feels worse than it sounds in that list. And electrician is coming tomorrow and I've made more phone calls in the last few days than....ever. My ear is about to grow a phone.
  
  So, I'm eating every meal as if it's my last. And I'm hoping for the best as the summer comes to a close. \r

  • Well, I'm working on replacing my things. I've got a combo modem/router that's wired/wireless scoped out, which will cut down on cords and the space these things take up. As well as give me wireless capabilities in case I have to/get to replace my laptop instead of just fixing it. Which would be wonderful! The big thing is getting a new dog box--I need to go online to PetSmart and look today, because Ry figured out that he can leave the yard to go in the street. He's so cute because he hasn't figure out that the fence is down everywhere---he still stops at the end of the sidewalk and hasn't left the back yard. Just one part of the front yard. • It's Sara's Movie Review Hut!!!! This week's entry: Must Love Dogs -- Sara, 14:52:23 08/04/05 Thu [4]
  This past weekend, my parents visited me and we went to see the movie, Must Love Dogs starring Diane Lane and John Cusack and a bunch of other people whose names I don't know.
  
  Here's the quickie synopsis:
  Girl gets in messy divorce and loses faith in love. Her family takes matters into their own hands and puts her profile on an online dating site. Girl has lots of loser dates, but then meets Boy. Boy and Girl don't exactly hit it off right away, but just can't seem to stay away from each other. Situational comedy ensues!
  
  My review:
  I was pleasantly suprised at how cute this movie was when I went to see it in the theater. It was much better than I expected it to be. Yes, it is predictable (you know it will have a happy ending), and yes, a few of the scenes are a bit contrived and forced for comedic purposes, and yes, there aren't that many actual dogs, but if you are just looking for a feel-good piece of fluff (I love fluff) Must Love Dogs is a great choice.
  
  The comedy is fast paced with one-liners galore (especially within the family scenes) and there were several times I found myself not only chuckling, but laughing out loud with the rest of the audience. Must Love Dogs is the cinematic equivalent to the paperback novel you take to the beach with you on a sunny summer day. It's just there to make you feel good; no thinking required. I would definately recommend this movie to all of those just wanting a brief two-hour escape without having to shell out the big bucks to fly to the Bahamas. I give it 4/5 Ice Teas with funky little umbrellas in them.

  • I just saw it this weekend, and also had to admit it was better than I thoguht it would be - but then I thought it looked cute - yeah predictable, but thats what romantic comedies are - besides I went to see it with my girlfriends I was visiting...   I also wish that my sis and I had worked on her website, because she's ready to make some updates about the book..... Oh well, before the end of summer, I hope! She's got GREAT content, but the organization (my area) is poor. We're having creative differences. But that's just babble on my part....on to the speculation!

  Okay---so, what summer blockbusters has everyone ventured out to see? The bombs? The great previews? Who's looking forward to what?

  What I'm really looking forward to is Rent, in the fall. The preview was with Bewitched. I don't know if anyone else saw it, but to me it was worth the price of a ticket just to see the preview for that. As soon as I got home I went to HSX to play around with stuff I had seen at the previews---but especially Rent.
  
  I have a friend I go to the movies with and she sent me a list--so we're starting our Movie Battle Plan for the next year.

  Vacation time has arrived! I'm headed down under to visit my parents in Australia. Right now I'm really looking forward to it because it's almost winter there, and my house is not air conditioned.....of course, it's my fault for wearing jeans today to clean in instead of just changing before I'm ready to leave.
  
  Hopefully I can check in while I'm gone. As summer officially arrives in the next two weeks--I hope everyone has fun plans--like baseball games, local pools, and evening walks!

  I have never been on to suffer the torment of angonizing moments waiting to fall asleep. Usually I'm out within 5 minutes. My ability to fall asleep and wake up quickly is one of my brain's greatest strengths. I can wake up when the dog gets off his pillow in the middle of the night and his little toenails click on the floor. I let him out. He does his thing. And then I'm back asleep as if I never woke up. Amazing thing the brain is when it regulates sleep....
  
  But now....jetlag. Except, you would think I'd be able to fall asleep after being awake the whole day. I didn't really sleep in--just until nine. So here I am at almost two am typing away and reading away until I find something that makes me just a little bit sleepy. This happened Thursday night too and I ended up with under four hours of sleep. I was a bit tired yesterday and then slept fine last night. But tonight...noooooo....not a chance my brain says.
  
  Now I'm babbling. I've caught up on reading Tomato Nation Vines, I've updated my movie stocks at HSX, I'm up-to-date at TWoP, teevee.org, USA Today, and several other sites......
  
  Sheesh. I need some sheep already!

  • Hi C. I am like you. I can fall asleep the minute my head reaches the pillow ONLY if I go to bed at my usual time. However, if I stay awake even half an hour later than usual I have difficulty falling asleep. On those occasions I try to relax myself and do deep breathing. Basically I follow yoga relaxation techniques. I tell imagine that my muscles are getting heavier and heavier as I inhale for 10 counts and exhale for 10 count. Five or six time and I am a goner.     • Tigers actually love water. When we put the new tanks in, the cats don't wait for it to be full before they plop themselves inside and play around with the water. They also love to just lie in it and then pounce out, spraying all of us with water and wet fur. :-) The best, which I didn't get on film, was when one of the females wiggled herself into her tall, but slender water tank - including wrapping her tail around the fence to help balance her as she climbed in - and then scrunched down so only her face was out of the water.   Today is my last day of work at the Writing Center. I don't start my graduate assistantship until August 31. So I have more than two months off.   For those that don't know the story, back in January I was watching ITAS with Kiefer Sutherland and saw a photo of him playing hockey that looked very familiar. Turned out that it *was* my photo ... his assistant found it on the Internet (probably some fansite) and saved it to her computer then e-mailed it to ITAS for his episode. Because the photo no longer had my credit on it, the producers didn't know who to contact for permission.
  
  Luckily I work in this crazy business and after only about three days, I was able to reach the producers and chatted with them about the photo's use. We came to a monetary agreement and also that I'd be given photo credit at the next new episode of the show. That was today's run of the Angelina Jolie interview.
  
  I'm thrilled and amazed that it actually happened. If I can find someone who can do screen caps, I'll make a copy of that card and share it with you.
