Norman,

Why don't they have to Norman...? Is it because the distance to the cows is reasonable for the horses and dogs...??? I'm going to say yes.

Often people drive out to the gathering point of the cattle because one they're on a parcel of public land leased out for grazing and are required to take the roads and not have livestock of any kind on the parcels used to get to the cows or two the parcel is on a section or two that's got multiple sections between them. On the moves I've been on we drove up, started at 8 am and by the time we got home on horseback the whole day with precious few stops, it was 10 or so in the evening and that was taking adults and adolescents... Moving babies takes longer and a LOT more energy to keep those little ones going and their momma's going without turning around searching for their babies (cows are so dumb)...

Anyway my point was all about the size of the property someone is working on and if it's reasonable to take the horses and dogs out minus horse trailer etc... then by all means... But if not, the majority of ranchers I know use the trailer to get to the gathering spot because it'd take a day just to get there on horseback.

Sara
