The idea of 'warp highways' has been around for some time, but has had no direct official of canon proof. All we know is that at times, ships seem to travel much greater distances than they should be able to, given the speeds that are generally accepted.

The only problem is that if you go by the strict Paramount canon definition, the 'Star Charts' books would not be canon and would not therefore be valid. In Paramount's eyes, it would be like the TNG:Technical Manual. However, because they were written by the people who make the show, many debate sites (including this one) allow the TMs as long as they do not contradict the show. So what are peoples thoughts about whether the Star Charts books should be allowed? Yea or nay?
