How about this as a counter scenario:-

The USS Sovereign (Sovereign class) is engaged in a wargame exercise against the USS Venture (Galaxy class) and the USS Intrepid (Intrepid class), when they suddenly recieve a distress call from an Andorian merchent vessel. The merchent captain reports that three ships are chasing him. The message ends abruptly, and all attempts to re-establish contact fail.

The commanding officer on the Sovereign ends the wargames, and the three Federation ships race to intercept at high warp.

After a few minutes, the Sovereign picks up four ships near a large asteroid field. All attempts to contact any of the ships fail. As the Federation force close at warp speed, they detect an explosion. Seconds later they confirm that the Andorian ship has been obliterated with the loss of all 300 crew and passengers.

The Federation force splits into two, with the Intrepid (the fastest ship) racing ahead, followed by the two Capital ships. The Intrepid arrives at the system, and drops out of warp 18 million kilometers (a light minute) from the hostile ships. She relays her sensor data back to the larger ships.

The Intrepid captain is astounded to see the size of one of the attacking ships, and wisely decides to hold the range open until the Sovereign and Venture arrive to back him up. Again he tries to contact the alien ships, and again they ignore him.

A few minutes after the Intrepid's arrival, his sensors detect a surge of power from the aliens, and the three hostile ships vanish. A fraction of a second later, they reappear a few thousand kilometers in front, already opening fire.

The Intrepid's helmsman reacts instantly, putting the manouverable ship into a corkscrew dive to avoid the bolts of energy heading towards them. The tactic is nearly successful, but one the bolts strikes the Intrepid's shields, sending the ship spinning out of control, and causing multiple equipment failures.

The Intrepid captain calls for warp speed, but the warp core is damaged, and the ship is limited to impulse. Desperately, he orders full impulse and more evasive manouvers. As the ship turns, it looses off a salvo of phasers and quantum torpedoes at the Carrack. However, it is a pitiful response to the second Imperial salvo already heading towards them.

Suddenly the Sovereign and Galaxy appear 1 million km behind the Imperial force, dropping just below the warp threshold to launch their weapons. They fire a full salvo of twenty photons and three quantum torpedoes at the Carrack. The Carrick is taken by surprise, barely detecting the near light speed torpedoes as they cross the 1 million km in just over three seconds.

The Carrack explodes in a blast of light, followed seconds later by the Intrepid as multiple turbolasers hit home.

With both sides suffering a loss at almost the same time, the two squadrons pause and re-evaluate their options.

The Federation ships move back above the warp threshold, and try to stay behind the large ISD II.

On the ISD, the Captain orders the navigation computer to calculate a microjump to put him alongside the enemy starships. However, the navicomp has a problem. The enemy ships are moving at over 3 million kilometers a second (warp 2). A microjump takes a few seocnds to calculate, and by the time it is calculated, the target ships would be tens of millions of kilometers away.

As the imperial captains realises the problem, the enemy ships drop below the warp threshold two million km off his port quarter, and fire another salvo of torpedoes. The ISD lumbers around to present its broadside, but before it can fire, the annoying enemy return to warp.

The torpedos again arrive at speeds approaching 300,000km a second, but this time the Imperial force is ready. The ISD and the Dreadnough put up a blanket of flakburst turbolasers in the path of the torpedoes. Only two photons and two quantums get through, striking the Dreadnought and causing damage to the port shield.

The ISD launches fighters, and orders them to try to 'herd' the enemy ships into a kill zone. However, it soon becomes obvious that the fighters are far too slow to manage that job effectively. After another salvo of torpedos decimates the unshielded fighters, the survivors are recalled to the ISD.

The Imperial captain is no fool. He knows that he cannot catch ships that fast in open space. He knows he must somehow slow them down, so his weapons can be effective. His eye wanders over the screen showing local space, and falls on the asteroid field. Without hesitation, he orders a course change, and the might Imperial ships lumber towards the rocky field.

Two more torpedo salvos hit the Dreadnought, before they reach the safety of the asteroid field. Th ISD is undamaged, and proceeds to blast a path further into the field. The Dreadnought has damaged shields, and minor damage to its drive section, but is still combat worthy.

From within the asteroid field, the ISD watches to two Federation ships drop out of warp, and come to rest five million km outside. Obviously they are not enthusiastic about entering the field, but if they want to destroy the Imperials, that is what they have to do.

Moving forward at half impulse, the Galaxy and Soveriegn begin to pick their way into the field. Their phasers blast smaller asteroid, and the relatively manouverable ships nimbly avoid the larger rocks.

At 100,000km, the two squadrons are well within weapon range, but because of the asteroid storm, neither can actually hit the other. Both continue to close, and both continue to take damage from the asteroids.

At 2000km range, the Imperial captain decides to try his luck, and the ships open fire. The vast majority of turbolasers hit asteroids and are wasted, but two manage to get through the rock blizzard. One hits the Sovereign, making the 700m ship shake. The Sovereign's shields are down by 30%, but with the Galaxy, it returns fire with phasers and torpedoes. Only one phaser beam and one photon get through the blizzard. The photon is stopped by the ISDs point defence, and the phaser beam hits the Dreadnoughts forward shield, causing minimal damage.

The two sides trade fire for the next three minutes. The vast majority of shots are wasted on errent asteroids, but some get through. The Imperial launch their remaining fighters, but the asteroids kill many of them. The survivors find themselves flying into a hail of phaser fire, and none survive to return to their mother ships. At the end of the three minutes, the Federation force withdraws, having clearly had the worst of the enchange. The sheer numbers of Imperial weapon mounts means that they were more liklely to get hits. Furthermore, the power of Imperial weapons is clearly superior to Federation weapons. The Federation torpedoes have been ineffective, because they were unable to reach high speeds, because their firing ships have been forced to travel slowly inside the field. A lot of torpedoes were therefore intercepted by point defence. The Federation ships move outside the Asteroid field, and wait, trying to repair their damage.

The ISD commander considers what to do next. He knows if he moves outside the field, he will immediately be subject to the same faster than light hit-and-run attacks that he saw earlier, and he knows that he cannot win that fight. He considers staying in the field, but that is not a good option. All the time he is in the field, he is taking damage. His final option is to withdraw from the battle, and let the rest of the fleet know about these dangerous aliens. They maybe be able to withstand three ships, but can they withstand 300 or 3000 or 30,000? He decides to withdraw, and begins to move around to the other side of the field.

The Federation commander was appalled at the power of the enemy weapons, and knows he cannot risk another short range, toe-to-toe engagement. He knows he has a speed and manouverabilty advantage, and that he must use it in any battle. However, his ships had been firing for over three minutes, and he has already fired 230 torpedoes. He has made a significant dent in his torpedo magazine. Most of the torpedoes had been wasted in the asteroid field. He must make better use of them in future.

His sensor chief detects the enemy attempting to move out of the field on the other side, and he orders a quick warp hop to intercept.

As the Imperial fleet exit the field, they are immedietely greeted by 23 incoming torpedoes at near light speed. This time the torpedoes are vectored in a different angles, to make interception harder. Most of the torpedoes hit home, doing noticable damage to the ISDs bridge shields. The Imperial forces takes another salvo, before they can make the jump to hyper.

The Federation ships briefly track the Imperial ships, but then lose contact. After a few minutes pointless scanning, they realise the enemy are gone, and turn back to look for survivors from the Intrepid and Carrack.
