I'm going to suggest a senario.
While the feddies are scanning planets, the imps are observing them from near the asteroid belt.
Before the feddies get to hoth, the imps send the carrak to hide in a big blizzard, to awate the feddies. They come, detect a metal thing in the blizzard but can't tell exactly what it is, when they finnally do detect the metal thing as aship, they beam down some people to investigate, because that's what feddies do. This exactly what imps have been waiting for.
They begin a rapid assent from the planet, and from very low orbit opin fire on the galaxy, doing minimal damage, taking moderate damage in return, the carrak orients towards the asteroid belt and goes hyper.
The feddies beam up their people and give chase. They find the carrak dodging asteroids, blasting some out of sky, it is making rapid progress towards the deeper regions of the asteroid belt, they move in, hoping that the carrak will get driven towards them.
Instead, the Imp Star Deuce and Dreadnought jump out of hyper right behind them as they are moving into the belt. The dreadnought begins unloading green hell on the galaxy, the Carrak comes back towing an asteroid with its tractor beam, which it throws at the intrepid before it starts unloading all of its guns on it. The Soveriegn trades heavy fire with the Imp Star Deuce, and the whole of the feddie fleet is slowly being pushed farther into the asteroid field, The ISD:II fires 30 proto-torps at the Galaxy and blows the port nacel off, the dreadnought then fires a salvo right at the bridg, killing the crew instantly, they then use the tractor to push the ship farther into the asteroid field where it is destroyed by asteroids.
The Dreadnought and ISD:II now concentrate all of their fire on the Soveriegn, as the Intrepid kills the Carrak.
The Intrepid is clipped by an asteroid, damaging her drives. I rams and destroyes the dreadnought.
The ISD:II, gettign impacient, fires 3 salvos of proto-torps (thats 60 missiles per salvo, 180 total) and blows a huge hole in the saucer section, all the way through! THey then tractor the ship deeper into the asteroid feild, and are themselves almost destroyed on the way out.
result, Imperial victory, but with a big price.
