Why do girls put such a precedent on clothes
It's like a religion to them, they don't even know
They do not realize the ones they choose to impress
Are the ones least likely to implement their success
The male dominated fashion industry with all their amoral behavior and greed
Lacking fortitude and insight to protect the delicate woman's seed
"Who are you to tell me how I might dress"
Looking at the man who loves and cares for you like he is not a success
Uncompromising, insecure and full of male pride you say
Your tight clothes always keeping him at bay
Don't worry who's looking at me and who stares at my rear
You know you're the one I love and want to be near
If only Non-Muslim women knew how chattel-like and exploited they are
If only they could see what could be waiting for them if they accepted Islam
It could be Jannah, Insha'Allah.

Subject: new, fast-growing international group with talks on Islam (D.C. area)

Author:

[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 15:12:57 01/02/03 Thu

There is a popular and fast-growing new international group in the D.C. area that has provided many talks on Islam during the past several months.

The group is D.C. International Connection/East-West Connection. East-West provides talks about various cultures and religions, as well as social get-togethers. It is intended to be primarily for single professionals (college age, on up to the mid-40s or so). A number of college students attend these meetings.

As I mentioned, the focus of the talks is often Islam. That's because the group's organizer, Tony Young, has lived in Turkey and the Soviet Union and has several Muslim friends. At least a third of the group's 100 or so regular attendees are Muslim; they are from countries such as Iran, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Pakistan. Other (non-Muslim) attendees are from countries such as China and India. Also among the attendees are many Americans who have lived overseas and have friends from various cultures. There are software developers, engineers, statisticians, physical fitness trainers, and other professionals in the group.

The group is a great way for people of different faiths (as well as secular individuals) to connect both professionally and socially. Meetings are held twice a month, every other Saturday evening of each month.

To get on the mailing list for East-West Connection/D.C. International Connection, individuals can send emails to the group's organizer, Tony Young, at east_west_connection@hotmail.com introducing themselves and asking to be included on the list. They can also call him on his cell phone; his number is 703-475-8328.

The next event - this Saturday, Jan. 4 - will provide a talk on Buddhism.

Here's the notice about the upcoming event:

"The Dalai Lama is considered to be one of the most interesting and key spiritual leaders in the world today. It is with great pleasure that I have just received notice that we will be having his personal assistant, Geshe Tenzin Dhargye, to be our special speaker this coming Saturday for our East-West Connection social. Although the Geshe is very busy, he has assured us that he will speak to us upon his arrival from Philadelphia, somewhere between 9PM and 10PM. We are truly grateful. The Geshe is going to be talking about the 'Spiritual Philosophy of the Dalai Lama'. Our speaker resides with the Dalai Lama in India, although their home is obviously Tibet.

"I am very happy to once again focus on Asia. I personally feel that I could learn a lot by listening to this man. More importantly, I am asking all of you to take the time to please share this gathering with others. We extend a special invitation to all of our Central and Far Eastern Asian friends, especially students. This is relatively short notice and so please take the time to forward this email to friends and associates, as well as religious temples, etc. Please take seriously the fact that I need your help to get the word out quickly as I am sure many will want to join us! We will be advertising in the Washington Post and the City Paper, and so we are expecting a large gathering.

****Biography of our speaker****

"Geshe Tenzin Dhargye was born in Leh, Ladakh, northern India, in 1968. He entered the Sera-Me monastery, where he received his education, at the age of nine. He was awarded the title "Geshe Lharampa", equivalent to a doctorate in theology in the West, in February 1995, following eighteen years of study of Buddhist philosophy.

"In 1997 Geshe-la was called to Dharamsala at the request of the Dalai Lama. Since then he has visited a number of European countries, giving instruction in Buddhist philosophy and lecturing on Tibet during his various trips. Most recently, Geshe-la spent a year teaching at the University of Virginia, where he worked alongside Prof. Jeffrey Hopkins among others. Geshe-la spent September 2000 being prepared for his stay in Graz by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

"Please do pass this info on as all are welcome! His theme will be the spiritual teachings of the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama is considered one of the key spirituals in the world today. We would be very grateful to have any and all central and eastern Asians joining us, regardless of their religious or political persuasions.

"As usual, these evening are designed to be social points of welcome and connection for internationals and newcomers in our area. They are free but all are asked to consider bringing a potluck dish once again.

"Rough Schedule:
630 to 7 - set up for those that can help.
8 pm - arrival and food preparation.
8:30 - introductions
9 to 9:30 or later for our speaker, depending on his arrival. Talk and questions.

"Location: 3835 9th Street in the Party Room (the building is next to the Ballston Metro).

"This is in a complex located on 9th street between Pollard St. and N. Oakland St. Coming from Common Grounds Café (at 3211 Wilson Blvd.), travel down Fairfax Dr. towards Ballson. Make a left onto Pollard St. and another left at the next block which is 9th St. You can find plenty of parking on Fairfax Dr. and Pollard St. We will be assembled in the party room of this complex. There will be a doorman to direct you to the social.

"Bring a Friend and a dish please. All Internationals, students, and newcomers are always our special guests and asked only to bring an open heart to share their lives with us! Now it is up to you to pass the word!

For more info on meeting location call Tony Young at 703-475-8328."

Please pardon the intrusion of a Christian voice into your message board. I had occasion to read a story in today's "Washington Post" about the recent shootings in the Washington area. It included a quote that was attributed to the president of your organization. After I read it, I could not remain silent. I felt moved to reassure her and all of you that perhaps things are not as she fears. The quote was,

"It hurts that that's the first thing people think about, that it could be Muslims who are doing this," said Amna Arshad, a junior studying international affairs at George Washington University, where she is president of the Muslim Student Association. "It didn't really come to my head until I started hearing it in the news media.

"Given everything that's happened in the last couple of years . . . it seems logical," added Arshad, who lives in Great Falls. "But at the same time, it's not fair. If it was before 9/11, a Muslim terrorist wouldn't be the first thing people think about."

I am sorry that the members of the Muslim community in the United States feel such fear and are subject to so much suspicion. While it may be true that some non-muslims immediately blame "Muslim terrorists" when something bad happens, please be assured that a lot of us do not think that way and that we do not equate Muslims with "Muslim terrorists."

When I heard of the shootings, my first thought was of a deranged madman. As time went by and the number of deaths increased, I assumed the perpetrator to be a serial killer. It took me a few days to start thinking about the possibilty of international terrorism. I can't recall whether I thought of it independently or heard it on the news first, but I belive the order of my thoughts may have been rather similar to those of Ms. Arshad. It certainly wasn't my first thought.

During the many years of my life I have discovered there are plenty of good people in the world; many more than there are bad ones. I pray that Allah lets us all come to know this.

Dear whomever,
The reason of my query to your esteemed organization is to offer articles for your school magazine regularly, without compensation. The topics of the articles that raise the people’s awareness of the wonders of creation center around one goal: opening the readers’ mind by presenting the signs of God’s eternal existence to them. Nevertheless, the message in the articles is added to by the many colorful and relevant photographs, which not only enliven the page but are also good to provoke thoughts in themselves. The sincere, plain and fluent style employed ensures that everyone of every age and from every social group can easily understand the articles.
I will be very pleased to receive your feedback for above.

As-salaamu alaikum ya ikhwan! The website is beautiful, ma sha Allah. I am writing in concern of where the Muslims of GW are today, and where we are going tomorrow. We have a lot of work to do, and, as I serve in the Student Association Senate this year, I want to pass legislation calling on GW to establish an Islamic Student Center. I feel as though we can do anything with the grace and mercy of Allah, and we can do this. I truly believe that we can establish a Center for Muslims on this campus! But before I can do anything, I need the support of my Muslim brothers and sisters. I will email Amna insha Allah very soon, and hopefully we all can get together this year and make something happen for the MSA and every single Muslim on this campus.

It would probably be a good idea to post the location(s)

Assalamu'alaikum Wr. Wb.

Ijust wanna share an info that ,alhamdulillah, a new charity organization called Indonesian Children's Relief has been founded.
The organization was established by our brothers and sisters (multinational) from UK to help refugee children in Indonesia (www.icruk.org).

Many people are not aware that Indonesia has the fourth largest refugees in the world.

To extend the help for the very needy children, we are also planning to establish an ICR US chapter.
As the ICR in UK, US ICR will also be run by volunteers. So all contributions will go toward the children (mostly) and the programs. Alhamdulillah, so far we received many good responses from brothers and sisters in the DC/Virginia/Maryland areas.

As part of our program, we are planning to have a Indonesian refugees awareness program at ISNA convention this August.
Currently, we are in need of financial contribution.
Any helps from brothers and sisters are greatly appreciated.

If any brothers or sisters are willing to help (both financially and non financially), please contact me at ratsir@gwu.edu.

Thank you very much in advanced.

Wassalamu'alaikum wr.wb.
