Subject: 1st Washington, D.C. Voice-Over Expo! ... GW MSA is Invited

Author:
A. J. Costa
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 13:01:28 10/24/03 Fri

Hello GW MSA!

James Earl Jones does it. So does Paul Anthony, Vanessa Williams, and Ellen
Degeneres. You, too, can do VOICE-OVERS for radio, television, internet, or
any other media and you do not have to be a celebrity. You, too, can make
money -- annual salary or part-time earnings -- with your speaking voice.
You, too, can build a career as a VOICE-OVER talent/personality.

Please join me at an informational and action-packed seminar coming to the
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. The seminar is the first of its kind,
focusing on the little known, but relatively new career field of
VOICE-OVERS.

THE FIRST EVER WASHINGTON, D.C. VOICE-OVER EXPO
Saturday, November 1, 2003
10 AM to 5 PM
George Washington University Marvin Center Conference Center
3rd and 4th Floors
800 21st Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20052
Info and Tickets: www.suchavoice.com/rep/voiceover

There will be six (6) unique sessions including:

Hear it from a Pro! Paul Anthony on Voice-Overs
One of the Washington Metropolitan Areas hottest and well known
voice-over/TV personalities, Paul Anthony, will share his knowledge and
ideas on a voice-over career and the industry.

Youre on the Air ... How to REALLY make it in Voice-Overs
Award-winning producer, Dan Levine, will discuss the tools needed to start
your career and get voice-over work.

Marketing Magic
Jay Silverman will discuss all the tools (i.e., specs, cover letters, sales
packages, etc.) required to market yourself in the world of voice-overs.

The Ad Man Talks
Listen to Ralph Thompson, President of an advertising agency, as he shares
his thoughts on why and which voice talent is actually selected.

Voice-Over Coach in Action
David Bourgeois, acclaimed voice-over coach and producer, will detail how
you can improve your voice-over technique so that ad agencies call YOU for
the job.

How do you rate?
Watch, listen, and participate as the room turns into a digital recording
studio, and YOU record and hear your voice played back go a simulated
voice-over. An evaluation of your potential will be available upon your
request following the expo.

Tickets are $50 through October 31, 2003 and $60 at the door.

Needless to say, I believe this will be a great opportunity to learn about
and become involved in a new career, whether full or part time. Come and
CHECK IT OUT. If you can not be there, pass along this information to other
GW MSA members and/or GWU students, student organizations, faculty, and staff
who can. DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!

To learn more and purchase your tickets, please visit:
www.suchavoice.com/rep/voiceover

Thank you. See you, GW MSA, there!

Salam Everyone,

Hope everyone's year has been blessed so far (iA). Inshallah I hope someone can help me with my current dilemma. I am a first year graduate student at GWU and I just started this semester. I am currently staying at a friend's place in VA but I'm on the couch, so I'm looking for someone to share a decent 1bdr/2bdr apartment with in or near NW DC area. If you dont' want to room with me but know of someone who's subletting or what not, please let me know. I'm looking for a room that will cost me approximately $700 (Util incl.). I'm considerate, very clean, studious, but also likes to explore what the city has to offer, and very anti-drama. Please let me know if you have any helpful information for me. Jazakallah khair :-D

oh and please email me at qambareen@gmail.com for a faster response

Subject: Careful with propagating mistranslations of the Qur'an...

Date Posted: 04:46:10 10/15/05 Sat

Assalamu Alykum,

So dawah organizations spend a lot on dawah every year and knowing that the Quran is the best dawah tool they regularly distribute free copies of the Quran. You always wonder: Did any of the people who got copies of the Quran ever read it? Did they know from where to begin reading? Did they know how to get around the Quran? Was the translation of the Quran good and engaging? Will they come back to me to ask what do you mean you cant take a Jew or a Christian as a friend! when you know that this is a mistranslation of the Quranic verses? Will I have to nag them to read it? Will they ever read it?!

The fact of the matter is that these questions are hard to answer. People often get intimidated by books that they havent seen or heard before. Add to this the fallacies being propagated in the media that the Quran is a book of violence or a book of hate, and the fact that existing Quranic translations use poor or outdated English.

What if there was a solution that would introduce the Quran in a beautiful, engaging, accurate, and appropriately-guided way! You need not wait anymore. QuranNow.com offers melodious recitations of selected chapters of the Qur'an followed by a unique and powerful audio translation of the verses into modern American English. QuranNow.com has painstakingly prepared a new translation that is easy, accurate, accessible, fluent, and descriptive. The audio translation is delivered by award-winning author and poet El-Hajj Mauri Saalakhan. The selected chapters serve as proper entry points into the Quran covering issues of belief, inter-religious dialogue, morality, and mannerisms along with striking accounts of the interaction between different prophets and their nations.

Join numerous dawah organizations who have made the QuranNow.com CDs their dawah tool of choice. Try it today and see the results immediately! Visit http://www.QuranNow.com today, listen to audio samples and free downloads, and take advantage of our special offers.

Date Posted: 05:17:21 07/14/05 Thu

Lets WORRY about the Quran

O Mankind! There has come to you a good ADVICE from your Lord, a HEALING for that which is in your breasts (disease of ignorance, doubt, worry, hypocrisy, and differences), a GUIDANCE, and a MERCY (explaining lawful and unlawful things) for the believers. Say: In the Bounty of Allah, and in His Mercy (i.e. Islam and the Quran); therein let them rejoice. That is better than what they amass. (Surah Yunus, 57-58)

And know that your wealth and your children are only a TRIAL. (Surah Al-Anfal, 28)

STOP RIGHT THERE!

DONT GET DEPRESSED!

DONT LOSE YOURSELF OVER SILLY TRIVIALITIES!

DONT OVER-INDULGE IN WORRY ABOUT WORLDLY MATTERS!

WORRY ABOUT THE QURAN!
Dont be one of those who ABANDON the Quran!
Abandoning belief!
Abandoning proper reading!
Abandoning understanding!
Abandoning carrying out its commands!
Turning away from it for something TRIVIAL!

Inner peace is ONLY in nearness to ALLAH
But whosoever turns away from My remembrance, verily for him is a life of HARDSHIP, and We shall raise him up BLIND on the Day of Resurrection. (Surah Ta-Ha, 124)

Follow the lights of wisdom and be a CARRIER of the Book of ALLAH
The Prophet PBUH said: Whoever recites the Quran, learns it, and acts according to it will be given a CROWN of LIGHT to wear on the Day of Judgment whose light will be like the Sun. His parents will be clothed in two garments that did not exist in this worldly life. So, they will say, what has caused us to be clothed (in these garments)? It will be said, your child taking hold of the Quran (i.e. memorizing it and acting upon it) has caused this.(Al-Hakim graded it authentic and Ath-Thahabee agreed with him)

Prophet PBUH: Indeed Allah will elevate some people with this book and He will degrade others with it. (Saheeh Muslim)

Salaam,

Hi, my name is Raina Khan, and I'm going to be interning this summer from june to august at the Embassy of Pakistan and have been looking for housing in NW DC for a while now but still am unable to find any suitable housing in the area, and the fact that I'm relocating from LA and don't know much about the housing options availabe in DC doesn't make it much easier. Anyhow I was wondering if perhaps anyone in the MSA was looking for a summer roommate for a couple of months, and was hoping you could please pass this email on to any sisters on your emailing list. If there is anyone, please have them either contact me via email (rainakha@usc.edu) or my cell phone (310-283-7311) . Thank you!

JazakAllah Khair,

Raina Khan

As salamu alaikum

My name is Abdullah Misra.

We are starting a grocery store called Zum Zum Superstores. The store will be much like your conventional grocery store, except every food product will be 100% Halal!

http://FreeOnlineSurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?id=95621

The opinions and thoughts of our brothers and sisters are important to us to help improve the store. In the end, the more feedback we get, the more we present better image and improve the availability of Halal products to consumers. I was wondering if you could forward our survey link (for market research) to your email list as an option for them to fill it out? We already have cooperation from many MSA's, eathalal.com, as well as other Muslim groups. If you have any comments/suggestions, email me please. Jazak Allahu khairun.

Date Posted: 07:57:11 03/29/05 Tue

Assalamu Alykum,

I would like to introduce
you to one of the most effective and creative dawah tools available today.

The QuranNow.com CD is a presentation of beautiful recitations of the Qur'an with a unique translation in modern American English. Divided into topics, the translation offers non-Muslims an easy entry point into exploring the Holy Qur'an in a easy to use format that can be heard while jogging, working, or on the road.

Here are some crucial facts:

- People are more likely to listen than to read.
- People often get intimidated by books that they are unfamiliar with.
- People often don't know where to start when they pickup a copy of the Qur'an.
- Many of the existing translations of Qur'an are difficult to read as they are written in what resembles Shakespearian English.
- Qur'anic recitation is beautiful and soothing and most people have never heard a recitation of the Qur'an.

QuranNow.com has addressed all the above issues by offering a set of
selected recitations of the Qur'an by Sheikh Sa'ad Al-Ghamdi followed by a
new audio translation of the meaning. The translation explores various explanations of the verses and subtly shows how they are connected. Its unique style means that many of the language misuses that appear in existing translations are avoided. The professional reading helps deliver a clear and concise meaning enhancing this unique experience.

In a post 9/11 world, this project has enjoyed enormous success in reaching non-Muslims and attracting their interest in Islam. Imagine a person being ready to accept Islam after listening to one of our CD's. In fact such has been the success of the CD's that they are now the dawah tool of choice for many Islamic organisations incluidng MSA. Mosques use the CD as a form of dawah and even chaplaincies in jails around North America have realized its potential.

QuranNow.com has been called "The most important dawah project in the last ten years" by Fadel Soliman, the head of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth, and was noted as "the most worthwhile dawah project currently underway" by Mohamed Abu-Taleb, the MSA president at UMCP.

Please visit QuranNow.com to listen to samples of the CD's including a complete recitation of Surat Luqman. For a limited time, QuranNow.com is offering dawah organizations more than 60% discount off the cover price ofthe CD's through our producer/partner Awakening (www.awakening.org). Try the

Subject: 1BR sunny new apartment ACROSS metro nr campus free parking $1200/month!

Author:
Shabana
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 20:27:03 03/15/05 Tue

This apartment needs to be rented out within the LAST TWO WEEKS OF MARCH 2005. Please help!! It is a gorgeous apartment, with a scenic view, and VERY convenient location.

Sunny 1 BR in new condo development. LITERALLY across from the Vienna metro. We have loved this apartment as tenants for more than a year.

CONVENIENT!! We're tenants, but we are not subletting. You will make your lease directly with the landlord. Please make appointments now! This is a great deal. You have to see it to believe it. The location is unbelievably convenient - ACROSS from Vienna metro (a total 2 minute walk), just by Routes 66 and 50, near 123 and Tysons, near a large post office (Merrifield) open most of the time and everyday, near restaurants, strip malls, nice homes, everything!

SCENIC!! -- And for those of you who like to open the blinds and see something pleasant instead of other buildings, our apartment is located right in front of a nice big pond where you can watch the geese swimming, wading, sitting on ice, swooping down in dramatic flocks, and even sometimes crossing the road and making drivers react in a most amusing manner!

NEW!!! -- Apartment is 1 year old and all appliances virtually new. I have NEVER seen any bugs or any other creatures in this building. For those of you who live in older buildings and share your space with cockroaches and ants and rats, you know how good this is.

APPLIANCES!! No more trips to laundry rooms, no more losing socks, no more carrying heavy loads back and forth: Washer/dryer AND dishwasher in unit. I've researched a LOT of area buildings, and those that charge you around $1000-1100 often don't have dishwashers and CAN'T have them because they're too old. Microwave.

BIG white bathroom with BIG bathtub and BIG counter space and 3 cabinets!

Closet shelving. Glass doors and gauze doors open to a balcony that looks out over a pond with geese in it. Central heat and air. Storage closet!! "Study/office" space. Fan in living room. Indoor spotlights in kitchen and living room. Wall to wall carpeting.

oh, and get this: ---

**FREE GARAGE PARKING!**
No worrying about finding street parking, no rushing home to get "first come first served" parking. No struggling with "dead" car in the winter. Assigned parking spaces for visitors! Controlled keycard entrance, secure building!

OFFICE!
Nice apartment office with computers and printer.

LOUNGE!
Lounge with big screen TV and wireless internet access, coffee & tea, comfy red chairs, cafe chairs.

FITNESS!
Building has a gym and swimming pool - and a basketball court!

FUN!
Pool, golf simulation room, foosball, basketball court, AND home theater, and currently free wireless Internet in all apartments from Verizon! DVD library in office.

No pets. No smoking preferred.

Our landlord is very nice, very friendly and we've never had any problems with him taking care of maintenance requests.

Salam aleikum,

I am a Muslim female looking for a roomate or two to rent a room with. I work full time in Washington, DC and go to GWU at night...just basically looking for a room to rent for the next couple of months to a year/two years. I am willing to pay $300-$550 a month, and would prefer an unfurnished room. I am quiet, serious, usually keep to myself, and will most likely be working/studying long hours. Please contact me with any followups or suggestions as to where I can go about finding a place to rent (even renting a small room from a Muslim family would be fine with me, as long as I had privacy). My phone number is also #202-637-8737. Aleikum salam,

I am looking for a female roommate to share my 2bed/2ba condo in the tysons corner area. I live in The Rotonda is a gated community with lots of ammenities, including indoor and outdoor pool, bowling, pool tables, foosball, exercise facilities. There is plenty of parking available.

The room is furnished with a queen size bed, has an attached bathroom and a walk-in closet. It is newly carpeted. There is a cable connection for tv and internet in the room. The living/dining room and kitchen are fully furnished and there is an in-unit washer and dryer....all for you to use and share.

The rent is $800 and will share 1/2 the utilities.

I am a friendly, laid-back, easy to get along with kinda person. I work full time and go to grad school part-time, so you will have the place to yourself a couple of evenings and most weekends (because I am out of town alot on the weekends).

GREAT LOCATION - It is walking distance to the Tysons Galleria and Tysons Corner mall or a very short 2 minute drive, a 2 minute drive to Route 7 and Route 123, 5 minute drive to I-495 and I-66. There is a shuttle that picks you up from outside the building and takes you to the closest metro bus stop and the Fairfax connector bus stops right outside the community. The place is very convenient to everything.

Salaam! My roommate Nasreen and I just got an apartment at The Chastleton in Dupont Circle (16th & R Streets NW) and are looking for a 3rd female roommmate. The apartment is 1000 square feet, 2-bedroom, separated living room (with its own entryway from the foyer), 1 bath, kitchen, large closets. The building has a laundry room, exercise room, valet, ballroom/partyroom, courtyard, 24-hour security/doorman, in the safest DC neighborhood! 5 blocks away from Dupont Circle metro!

We are using the living room as a 3rd bedroom. We are renting the living room out for $750, the smaller bedroom (with large windows covering 2 walls) for $775, and the big bedroom for $825. Please email me if interested! Move-in date is September 7th; we have a 13-month lease and are hoping for someone to move in for at least 9 months (but longer is better). Most utilities included - you only pay electric and cable.

Salaam, I am a female Muslim professional relocating to the DC area for a job in Bethesda, MD. The job starts at the end of August so I need to find a place to live at the latest by the middle of August. I am moving from Columbus, Ohio to the DC area. I want to have Muslim roommates

The maximum rent I want to pay is $600 excluding utilities and $700 including utilities. I want to have high speed internet access, and air conditioning.

The maximum commute I want is one hour including rush hour traffic. I can drive or take the metro.

What I am looking for: I want a place to live where I have my own bedroom and have the use of a kitchen and a bathroom. I dont mind sharing a bathroom or a kitchen.

I am single professional, 27 years old, easy going, independent, respectful and friendly roommate. I am pretty clean only slightly cluttered. I sleep at night because I will be working business hours.

I am planning to come down one weekend to take a look at places so if you are interested please give me a call to discuss details so I can set a date with you right away to see your place and meet you. I need to act quickly because I only have a month to find a place to live. Wa lay kum salaam 614-288-7481-Thanks. Mahhen Ghouse

Salaam Alaikum. My roommate Nasreen and I have found a HUGE 2-bedroom apartment in Dupont Circle at The Chastleton and are looking for a 3rd female roommate to share. We're making a 3rd bedroom out of half the living room that we'll rent out for only $550/month (the total montly rent is $2000 and we'll be responsible for the rest). Electric is extra (maybe $25/person/month) and other utilities are included. The living room is HUGE (24'0 x 12'0), so there will still be a large living room area once it's divided to give a private makeshift bedroom that's nearly the size of the other bedrooms. There's 24-hour security guard, uniformed doorman, PRIME location - 5 minute walk to Dupont Circle metro, great restaurants all around, AC, gated access, valet in the building for dry cleaning, etc., laundry facility, exercise room, ballroom, Gothic architecture, wall-to-wall carpeting. Please contact me if you're interested at pa55@georgetown.edu. Both Nasreen and I will be first year grad students at GW inshallah this fall.

Dear MSA Officials:

We have a translation company. We are managing Arabic, Pashto, Farsi, Indonesian and Urdu translations at this time. We need few students who speak and write these languages well as their mother tongue. A prior experience in translation would be preferable but not absolutely necessary. Any student who has a degree in Masters and Ph.D. would be a good candidate for translation work. We will train the potential translators and provide the translation software if needed.

Could you please have such good candidates get in touch with me?

Assalamualaikum,

I'm going to be starting at GW this year. I was wondering, which hall would it be best to stay in? My priority is my studies, but all things equal I'd like:

1.) High Speed Internet Access
2.) Private Bathroom
3.) Single Room (So I can pull an all-nighter study session if I need to)
4.) Being in Mount Vernon Campus...not Foggy Bottom.

Still, I was wondering, is there someplace that most of the MSA students live or a "Muslim Hall" :).

I'd appreciate any and all advice, jazaakallahukhairan.

Salam,
I'm a student at Stanford University and will be coming to Washington DC
for about 6-7 weeks for a summer internship. Since almost all apartments
I've checked are leased for a minimum of 3 months, I was wondering if there
were any Muslim families or students who were willing to sublet an
apartment or even a room to a female or Muslim sisters looking for a roommate, from around the first week of June to
the end of July. I'll be interning in the NW (Van Ness) area so if there's
something either in the NW, or somewhere else with public transport close
by, that would be great.

Please let me know as soon as possible - any contact information as well -
my cell phone is 650-799-8218

As-salaamu-aleikum,

InshaAllah I'll be in interning in DC from June 1 - Aug 6 2004. My workplace/internship is on 1101 Vermont Avenue (the intersection between Vermont and L street) which I think is sort of near GWU but really I have no idea since I'm a law student from California. I'm just estimating using Yahoo! maps. Basically, if you're a bro that needs a roommate hook it up. You have my e-mail and here's my cell #: (858) 205-4288. Jazak-Allah-Khaire.

In refrence to Samn's letter.
Even though I did'nt know Hasan too well, after hearing all the things from his friends and fellow students it is obvious that he was not a kind of person who would think of committing a suicide. He knew very well the difference between right and wrong. The school and the police department has to take appropriate actions in finding out the truth behind this. Please let us know how we can help and what can we do to find out the truth. It is not just the loss of the family it the loss of our community, and we will not rest untill we find out what really happened.

Dear MSA members,

I am Hasan Hussain's cousin writing to you from Karachi, Pakistan. As you all can well imagine this is a really tough time for Hasan's family especially for those of us who are far away from his parents and brother at this time of their need.
What makes our plight even worse is reading news reports that are insinuating this was suicide. We are too far to be able to raise our voice against this. Therefore we are requesting all of you to form a pressure group of sorts to make sure that the college conducts a thorough investigation and gives us an accurate account of the facts as they happened.
Hasan was a deeply religious person who never in his life let anything unhalal pass his lips, He got special permission from his high school in Florida to be able to pray and kept a prayer mat in his locker. There is no way he would have even considered doing something as unislamic as suicide.
More importantly he had absolutely no reason to go that way. If the police and college officials bother talking to his family and freinds, all will unanimously tell that he was an upbeat, ambitious, idealistic young man with an enormous zest for life. He comes from an affluent family with extremely loving parents and an adorable younger brother. He had a perfectly satisfying life.
Moreover, there seems to be no evidence on which they can base such a theory. There were no tools found in his room and according to their own admission, it is impossible to open the sliding doors leading to the balcony without taking out the nuts and bolts with some tool. The fact that there were no tools to be found is conclusive evidence that he could not have done it himseld. Mere absence of evidence pointing to foul play does not become evidence for suicide.
Furthermore, they have admitted themselves that their investigation is not yet complete. What gives them the right to release statements to the press based on incomplete investigation? What could be more irresponsible and inconsiderate than this?
I would also like to know why it is taking so long for them to do routine things like finger printing the room. It seems like the university is dragging their feet on this issue hoping that it will fizzle down and may relieve them from giving a final report that they can be held down to and will be unable to prove if challenged.
It is my earnest request for you to not let this die down. We must ensure that this does not happen to anyone else and in particular to a muslim if there is in fact hatred of muslims at the root of this tragedy.
I would like to share an e-mail that Hasan wrote to me with you all that shows his noble and mature thinking and also his excitement for his future and the life he was not allowed to finish.
Dear Saman Bhaji,
Thank you for the supporting words. Its always good to know you have
someone to count on when you take the kind of path people like us take.
I
think I have pretty much made my mind up on writing. I have looked
around
and nothing else seems to satisfy my need for a sense of personal
freedom,
and all other careers seem to make me feel like I am stuck on a
treadmill. I
think now the major decisions for me will be what medium of writing I
will
use (poetry, short story, novel, etc.) and what I will write about
(Right
now these questions seem bigger than the question of a career, as they
rely
on my conclusions on what the meaning of life and the role of art are.
Both
are certainly big issues, which will require years of contemplation and
discovery.) Who knows, though, I may find something else on the
horizon. But
be assured I doubt you will find me in a typical 'Desi' or
'respectable'
profession, or if I am, the Hasan you know will be quite dead and a
new,
boring, soulless Hasan will have taken his place.
In regards to your question on politics. I never really considered
politics as a career exactly. I have increasingly come to regard
"career
politicians" as personally bankrupt individuals. My view on political
issues
has always been to view them as moral issues and act as if they
affected me
personally. Right now the biggest political issue on my mind is the
plight
of American Muslims. After I feel like that is "dealt" with (if ever)
then I
would probably move on to international issues such as Chechnya,
Kashmir,
and Palestine as well as broader issues such as third world poverty and
neo-imperialism. However, I would not approach these issues as a career
politician. I think is abundantly clear, that violence can not solve
the
problems facing Muslims in the world today. I feel that first we must
establish moral and intellectual victory before any action can be taken
to
improve our plight. My solution would be a constant criticism of all
institions of oppression. I believe once we have stripped away the
rhetorical pretenses of our oppressers, victory becomes an
inevtiability
that only needs to be sought after unwaveringly. As such, I have an
abundance of criticism for a variety of institutions. I intend to
pursue
this criticism through both the spoken and written word and my top
targets
are the Republicans, Well-to-do American Muslims, Muslim
Fundamentalists,
Hawks, The Religious Right, So called 'Moderate' Muslims, the CIA,
"Patriotic" Americans, Muslim pre-occupation with a victimization
complex
(i.e. the belief that the Jews are responsible for everything wrong
with
Muslims today), etc. As you can see this leaves me with very few
allies, so
my political activities will have to be pursued essentially alone, and
I
will have to take full opportunity of the few public forums someone
would be
crazy enought to give me. Nontheless, I think only an unapologetic
honesty
can solve our problems. That kind of honesty will probably mean I will
always be considered a "fringe" political figure but at least I'll try
to
get people thinking and talking about the reality of the issues. Thats
what
I get for my radical political views, I guess. Anyway I have babbled on
quite a bit, and I hope my words add up to some sort of coherent
message.
Things here are great fun with Abbas, Daanish, and Sena Appa here. We
are
having all kinds of fun and we stayed up til 5:30 am the other day
debating
all sorts of issues (Arranged Marriage, Role of Women, What is Art,
etc.) I
suppose you had a longer telephone conversation with Sena Appa, so she
probably gave you a clearer picture of life down here. I hope you did
well
on your exam and please consider stopping by the ol' San Amaro place.
And do
write back to,
Your cousin and disciple,
Hasan
In the end, I will reiterate my request to not let this die down. We cannot allow them to malign Hasan's name when he is no more. I know Hasan would have done the same if it was anyone else in his place.

Thank-you
Saman Imtiaz

Salam Alaykum.
I am a student at California State University, Fresno. Insha Allah, this summer I will be doing a summer internship at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, Maryland.
I am looking for a place to stay from the beginning of July to the end of August (two complete months).
I noticed that this message board is fairly active, and was hoping that someone could help me out.
I am not very familiar with the Bethesda/D.C. area and was wondering whether someone could tell me how far it is from GWU. That is, if I were to stay at or near GWU, is there a safe and easily available public transportation system that I could use to and from Bethesda?
I would sincerely appreicate any help in this matter. Yahoo Maps, etc. are helpful only to a certain extent so I was hoping a student at GWU could help me out. Also, if anyone knows of a Muslim Sister in need of a roommate for those two months, please let me know.
Masha Allah, this website is really nice. Great Job!

Jazak Allah Kheir.
Salam,
Nazia

ASA,

I am doing an internship in DC for spring semester. My apt. contract is ending at the end of this month. My internship ends on May 20. So, I need accomodation for those 20 days. I am willing to pay/share rent. I do not have a personal transportation, so my preference is an affordable apt/room near a metro station. Please let me know if you have any info.

Thanks

Salaamu'alaikum brothers and sisters,

I was at the MSA conf. this weekend. Subhan'Allah it was very beneficial for me in my deen and duniya. Over there I was interviewed by a brother (whose name i don't recall) who was doing a focus group interview with MSA representatives from different states. He is collecting data and will eventually rank the top 25 MSA's and the worst 10 MSA's.

I am trying to get in touch with this brother. He also mentioned that he and his wife lived on GWU campus and if I am not mistaken I think he is the Muslim chaplin.

Can anyone of you please help me get this brother's contact info.? I wish I heard his name properly when he introduced himself. My bad ... May Allah (swt) help us all in our efforts.

Wasalaamu'alaikum

I sent the following message to the members of the MSA, Just hoping to get a little more enthusiasm in brining together the muslim students, and since GW's MSA is supposed to be the best one, you support would have made a difference, I hope I can still get it

as-salaam wa-alai-kum
For the past few days I have been going through the websites of various muslim student organizatons, in various universities. First of all let me commend you all on the superior work that these institutions are performing.
The reason for this email is however that of a proposal. Unity is strength, that is a saying we have all heard countless times, and the truth that these words hold are no secret either. You all work to bring together the muslim community(s) in your educational institutions, but how about now bringing all of these institutions together, so that we can form one strong united face..
A lot of institutions such as christian varsity and so forth have their chapters in campuses across the US, so why can't we as muslims have a united instituion. Our goals are common, our faith one, and therefore it only makes sense for us to join together all the MSA institutions.Even though we may already have a national MSA, its activities seem ot be known only to its direct members. As muslims we really need to play an active roles as ambassadors of Islam
I do hope and pray that in doing so I will have you support. If you like my idea and would like to see in turn into a reality, please feel free to email me and tell me.

Assalamu alaikum
I heard the announcement this past Jum'a that the MSA is trying to help raise money for a sister who needs some legal help. I wanted to make sure that you guys have accessed the listserves for Muslim lawyers and law students. InshaAllah someone on them can help the sister further. The groups are called NamlNet and NMLSA.
Their info is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NamlNet
and
www.nmlsa.org

Please let them know about the details of the situation (send them an email) and inshaAllah the attorneys can provide some advice and help.

Wasalamu alaikum,

Salam Alaykum,
My name is May Khalili, I'm 22 and I'm a 3rd year Ph.D. student at University of Maryland, Baltimore county. I recently moved into my apartment which is located in Columbia (SE of Baltimore, N of Washington). Columbia is one of Maryland's nicest and most secure areas. There are several major highways within minutes from the apartment (I-95,175, 100, 29,,,etc). The area also has several shopping malls within minutes. The apartment is a one bedroom/one bathroom but quite spacious. The dining room can be easily turned into a good bedroom. The rent is $380 + 1/2 utilities (telephone, cable TV and internet, water, gas and electricity). There is offstreet parking and the laundry facility is right next to my apartment (two footsteps outside my door). I'm looking for a quiet, clean and tidy sister roommate. Most of the ads here are for students at GWU so I'm not sure if my ad is suitable but if anybody is willing to commute, is moving or might know of a sister looking for a place in this area then my place might be appropriate. I guess that's all I have to say right now. If you're interested then please email me and I can provide you with any other information you might need.

Salamualikum sis Marjana

I was a student at the Ateneo de zamboanga too. I don't know if i should write in tausug or english! Anyway since we're not the only one in here i guess its better to write in English.

Anyway, Sis, i just want to ask about the situation of the muslims in Ateneo. Are the muslims active? Are they given their own rights like example are they excused from classess in case they have to leave for prayer? What sort of activities do the muslims have in order to remind one another of Islam especially in a jesuit school like Ateno where temptation and haram is almost like normal. Please do reply.....i really think it is time for active da'wa. I really regret spending my time IN AdzU quite carelessly and unmindful about Islam. Anyway as long as there are sisters like you there, inshaallah things can still happen. Jazakillahu kahiran....wassalam

Dear MSA Members:

I am attempting to complete an independent study concerning Radio Sawa this semester. Radio Sawa is a radio station operated by the Broadcasting Board of Governors (a U.S. agency) which is broadcasted to Middle Eastern nations. The station plays a mix of American and Arabic pop music and has news breaks at the top of each hour (more info is at http://www.ibb.gov/radiosawa/index_english.html).

I am looking for students who would be willing to read a brief article concerning Radio Sawa and fill out a short questionnaire. Additionally, I am searching for students who have either listened to Radio Sawa or are familiar with it to conduct brief interviews. All can be done quickly via e-mail. If you can help with this project, please e-mail me as soon as possible at MHartman@gwu.edu.
I apologize if it is inappropriate to post such material on this message board, but I am in great need of help concerning this matter.

I am looking for a bedroom in a house or an apartment to share with a brother. Close to a metro station would be nice.

Salam,

This seems like a great site to communicate with other muslims. Mashallah. I know this may be a bit too frank. But I have a good friend who is and her family are searching for a marriage partner. Basically the top quality she's looking for is a good muslim guy with good inner qualities. She's 23, well educated, a very good muslim, Pakistani, etc. Please email me if any brothers/sisters can give referrals, or personally a brother himself who is searching. All correspondence will abolutely be relayed to the girl's family. Thanks. Allah hafiz.

I hope no one will take offense of this message. Please understand that there are good muslims out there who are also searching for good muslims and mashallah I hope this bulletin board can help.
