Subject: An ongoing success for my son

Tz has had a weight problem for several years. He is now 12 yrs old, and well, we do have an idea of what he had faced in school and social situations with it. Being under 5 ft tall and we ended up having to buy a size 38w jeans for him ( and they were slighly tight...) near the end of the school year.

He had done a fair job of loosing and maintaining his weight at arround a size 36...but the scales were just depressing him, and not really helping. When he did not finish every bit on his lunch tray at school, school personell insisted he MUST finish it...and how it is bad to "waste food". UGH. Just some of the things he faced.

This summer, He ended up ditching the scales...it isnt worth the pain it was causing, and being weighed at the doctors office is enough. He had seen a dietician 3x over the summer, and that ended up being him tellin her about healthy changes he has made, and done...so I don't know if he will get to see her again or not, as she feels he does have a handle on her side of things.

Tz had cut back on sweets/sugars/sodas/Junk food. Also cut back some portion sizes as well. It was easier for him to follow. He cut back on how much he "snaks" inbetween meals, and durring the summer it was more of doing four meals a day (smaller amouts divided up)...that helped keep him from being tired and that low feeling between meals. Durring all this he visualized himself doing more of the things he wants to do, Like ride his bike with less breaks and keeping up with other children. He had also built a pc from used parts (with help) to boost his confidence in himself, over the summer. That worked his mind as well as the bike riding worked his body, boosting both. His jeans were getting baggy...a good sign of success!

I noticed him reaching for brussell sprouts, and carrots for snack instead of other choices, and gave words of encouragement and sincere praise. "Cool choice! I'll have some with you"...We do exercize once a week now too, together. (don't have to do it alone).

The real success showed up at the begining of school this year. Shopping for school clothes...he NOW wears a size 34! YIPPEE! Also, he is not being nagged at school for leaving a few bites of food on the tray either. His grades in school the first week were on the low side, but we took it in stride...and had a wonderful teacher to help ease the first week jitters. This week, he brought home an A+ in spelling and a B in another subject. Another test he took was in the same grading bracket. His pants still fit about the same ( had these one month), but that's ok! His view of himself has changed, and it shows in his appearance, the smaller jean size, increased activity by not haveing to "take a break" as often, and in his grades at school.

Tz is satisfied with what HE has accomplished, as he was in charge of what he was doing with the changes he made...he was in the drivers seat so to speak. However, he is not done.

His next goal is...down one more size and another increas in "keeping up" with other kids in sports and such. Nice goals. Oh yeh, and lets not forget stronger muscles too. He has a weight bench in his room to work on strenght ( but he cannot use it unless there is someone right there to spot him! and he does follow that.) Arthritis flair ups have diminished with the little program he has created that works with the current level of fitness he has. ;-)

Yeh, I am bragging...but for his age, it seems pretty good.
