Angie's brows lowered into a glower, and her dark eyes flashed in the firelight. ::Not smart, girl,:: she sent to Alexis, and scrambled up to perch on a large rock near their fire-ring with one of the broad leaves pulled over her.

Jeffrey did not even notice her. His face had all at once gone quite expressionless and he stared into the fire, the dancing flames reflecting in his glassy eyes. He had encountered Alexis' temper before, but this time it was intolerable. That she accused him, of all people, of possessing a poor sense of humanity...that, he could not grasp. After all, what was humanity but striving to understand and properly relate to other humans? All of his life, such had been his aim---if his efforts had been pushed away, did that say anything less of how he had striven to accept and be accepted, to be a part of his community and establish himself in the city?

(who are you?)
(go away, boy, we haven't time for)
(no, you can't)
(what do you think you're)
(just go away)
(stop bothering)
(don't you have something else to)
(Hey, Cheysuli! How's your lir-lover today?)

"I tried," he whispered, and his hands clenched into fists against his knees. He was not speaking to Alexis, nor to Angie (whom he had pretty much forgotten about, for the moment)---he spoke more to himself. "I tried," he repeated. Color rose in his cheeks. "I tried, all my life I tried, but they wouldn't listen. Even...even da...."

Angie sighed, sitting up to glare at him. "Will you keep it down, Fuzzy? Some of us need our sleep."

He looked up at her, and the blankness in his gaze was fractured. His grey eyes clouded over with anger and he leapt to his feet.

"I don't need you!" he cried, pointing wildly at both Angie and Alexis. "I don't need either of you! Just...just leave me alone!"

He stormed out of the circle of light, stumbling and wincing on his bare feet, and headed up the mountain as quickly as he could scramble.

Angie's mouth fell open and she whirled to her feet, scowling at Alexis. "You! This is all your fault!"

Gwenneth leapt to her feet, trembling. ::I...I must go after him!:: she said, helplessly frightened. ::Monet, what can I do! He'll die out there! Oh...I must speak with him!::
