Gwenneth hung her head. She knew Monet's words to be true and wise, but in her heart she still yearned to speak with Jeff on equal footing. Already the absolute separation from him was hurting her; she feared that her strength was already beginning to ebb from the lack of the lir-bond.

::How can you miss someone you've never really met?::

---

Angie didn't hear Alexis coming until she was on the ground, being tickled. For an instant she had no idea what was happening, and in the next instant her mind had screamed, Under attack!!

Quick as a striking snake, the young g.irl twisted around and knocked Alexis away with surprising strength. Jeff shouted and started running towards them; Angie looked around with wild eyes, and darted for the river. As Jeff fell to his knees beside Alexis, Angie came to an abrupt halt ankle-deep in the water. Her shoulders were hunched oddly.

"Are you okay?" Jeff asked Alexis, looking concerned. They both turned to stare at Angie, standing curiously rigid in the shallows of the river. At last the younger g.irl turned around slowly, and her expression was something close to fear.

"I...I don't know why I did that," she said, her voice flat. Her mouth worked like she wanted to continue, but she fell silent, and no one moved for a moment.

High above, a tired young eagle flapped down to perch halfway up a tall hemlock. Tilting his head from side to side, he studied the scene curiously.
