Gwenneveire looked solemnly down at the feather as it sat, glittering innocently, among the leaves. ::Oh, Rio....:: she whispered, and there was great turmoil in her green-gold eyes as she looked at the wolf. ::You invoke Tallmora upon our party...and I fear that you are right. But what shall all of your bravery come to, if you must stand before Dol'eira and proclaim our destiny? He is great, and very terrible.... Even your warrior would fall before him, dear Rio. For an age it has been his duty and purpose to keep our world separate from that on the eastern side. Who are we to stand before him and ask him to set aside this purpose?::

::Oh, don't you thickheads know anything?::

It was Angie's voice in the mindlink, clear and strident. ::You didn't listen to me, did you? I've been over the damn mountains before, so we can do it again!::

::Have you seen Dol'eira?:: Gwenneth shot back, annoyed.

::No. I went across the mountains and never saw him.::

::Then you do not know him.:: The liren looked at her companions with an air near desperation. ::I cannot describe to you the overwhelming power of this creature. To go against his will would be folly!::

Angie rolled her eyes in a manner of deepest exasperation. "Look, kid," she said to the elf, "it's getting on in the day and we want to make some progress before nightfall, okay? Sod off and go...do whatever winged elves do in their spare time. Come on, guys."

She turned and stumped resolutely down the path. Jeff hesitated for a moment, looking from Angie's retreating back to Shakira's alarmed face to Alexis, who promptly followed Angie. The boy cleared his throat, edging after them.

"So...yes, we'll be going now," he said, obviously unwilling to let the elf out of his sight. At last he turned and nearly ran to catch up with his companions. "Are you sure about this?" he asked, glancing around nervously.

"What's wrong---you scared?" Angie taunted, dark eyes flashing as she glanced back at him.

"No! ...Well, maybe a little," he admitted. "I've just got a bad feeling. Did you hear it? I am not that which you will face.... Doesn't that make you a little worried?"

"Nah." Angie waved a hand flippantly. "She's just tryin' to scare us off. We're not gonna let some puny elf put us off the Hedrons, are we?"

She gestured grandly to the mountains, which suddenly seemed frighteningly close as Jeff's gaze followed the craggy slopes. Am I---me, Jeffrey Gage Ryan---honestly going to climb those things? What happened to me? Just...why, it was just yesterday morning that I was safe behind the walls of my city. What am I doing out in the woods, in the company of an angel and an imp, fleeing from demons straight toward the Forbidden Mountains? I must be insane!

He felt his forehead, just to be sure, but couldn't tell if he was feverish or not. Just then, Alexis looked at him over her shoulder with a bright smile. In an instant, all fear and doubt was swept from the boy's mind, and the light of her smile replaced it. All at once he felt close to giddy, and knew that he would do anything to protect this moon-bright girl. If it was her heart's desire to cross the Hedrons, then he would give her that gift or die trying.

"No," he said, "of course not. It can't stop us."

Slowly, silent as a shadow, Gwenneth stepped halfway out of the brush cover and watched her boy as he disappeared down the path. The elf did not seem surprised to see her, and Gwen took no notice of it. Her eyes were filled with a great sadness.

::He means to go,:: she whispered to Monet and Rio. ::He wishes to please Alexis, and since she is so firmly decided, I fear that he will not turn aside. Mighty warrior!:: she called to Gabriel. ::There is no escape---we are for the mountains. When Dol'eira falls from the sky, you must identify yourself as this clan's leader.... And when you must stand before him to state our purpose, brave ones---proud Gabriel and courageous Rio---I shall stand beside you. Your fate is mine.::

High above and not so far away, the Eternal Flame of the Hedrons smiled. He had always relished a challenge.
