Wesimbi laughed.

He did not mean to; he felt laughter to be a very crude form of communicating emotion, and never participated in it, himself. But somehow the sight of this human (Cheysuli or no, a human) standing before him with a scowl on his face, demanding that he step aside, was so utterly absurd that the Guardian reacted crudely before he could stop himself.

"Murder you?" His voice was deep and rolling, like thunder would sound echoing in the mountain peaks. "Warrior, life is a precious gift. What the Creator has declared good, no creature should presume to control." He held out his three-fingered hand, palm upward, streching his powerful arm into the distance between them. "I hold your life in my hand, warrior. And those of all you so nobly protect."

He turned his burning blue eyes upon the younger warriors and Jellicles. Kalea was suddenly too intrigued to be frightened, and slowly looked down at her own hand. Four fingers.

"There is great turmoil in your strange clan. As we stand here, wasting my valuable time, it is breaking. Great rifts lie between the creatures you have gathered to yourself---whether or not they shall ever be mended, the Creator has not given me to see. But what I can see, warrior...." He leaned closer, mantling his great wings. "What I can see is very disturbing."

Straightening, he folded his arms across his chest.

All at once, Kalea sat up, eyes bright. "What are you?" she asked urgently, ignoring Nashota's protests at her boldness. "Where do you come from?"

Wesimbi looked at her gravely. "I come from the Creator, little queen. As do we all."

"Yes, but where were you born?" Kalea leaned forward eagerly. "Don't you have a home, a family?"

The Eternal Flame of the West stood as tall as he could, half-unfurling his giant wings. He seemed to fill the entire clearing, and his eyes were two points of icy light in the shadow. "Why do you ask?"

Kalea lowered her head, properly frightened once more. "I...I just...." she stuttered, and held out a shaking arm. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Your hands are like ours."

The great creature sighed lightly, and looked to Gabriel. "Warrior, it is my duty, given by the Creator, to guard the pass against the children of the West who would go to their deaths in the East. I am not called the Guardian because the title sounds impressive. I guard not only the pass, but all of the West. Give up your quest, warrior, for it is perilous and shall lead only to ruin."

Suddenly his head jerked up, and his eyes blazed. "Someone penetrates," he said quietly. "The boy with the closed mind journeys further into dangerous territory. Tell me, warrior---who is he? Why is his mind thus?"
