At the reply from the wolf-lir, Gwenneth pushed herself to the limit and her speed doubled. She winced slightly at the wolf's mention of bringing her lir. There was no time to explain, so she replied shortly:

::I come alone.::

It was not quite two minutes later that a giant shadow-shape leapt silently through the brush, crushing two of the men as it landed. Without making a sound it lashed out with an enormous paw and sent another man, crushed in upon himself, flying into the river. The rest of the men scattered, but the creature did not move. With fierce golden eyes she stared after the retreating figures, and one by one they flung themselves to the ground and did not move.

Gwenneth turned to the river with somber eyes. The wolf-lir was crawling up the far bank, limping, half-dragging her human counterpart. With a single leap Gwenneth cleared the river, seeming to float over the water, and helped the wolf, who had been shot in the shoulder. The bullet had gone through, however, lessening the chance of infection. Gwenneth sniffed carefully at the human and sat down slowly.

::He will live, but he needs healing,:: she remarked softly to the wolf, meeting the dark one's eyes.
