St. Gregory's has formed a committee to look into the feasibility of going NAIA Division II in basketball.

The big question is travel. What league could they join? Would the SAC allow them to be members in other sports?

The Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) has Oklahoma (nee Bartlesville) Wesleyan among its membership, which includes College of the Ozarks, Newman (Kan.), St. Mary (Kan.), Bellevue (Neb.), York (Neb.) and one other Nebraska or Kansas school I can't recall.

St. Greg's would be the southernmost school in that league. I don't see how travel would be much better for them than it is now, but at least there is a reasonably nearby league.

So if St. Greg's does leave, does that mean the SAC finally can come to its senses and invite Langston to join? That should have happened when Northwestern came in. I haven't seen Langston's new gym, but it's got to be a major upgrade over what LU did have. Plus, location-wise, it would be a great fit. LU also is very competitive, which fits right in with the rest of the SAC.

Two things.

I'm not sure how seriously SGU is taking this thing. It would be trading one Texas trip for a couple trips to Kansas and Nebraska - in all sports because I don't think the SAC would accept them in just the spring sports and soccer, but I could be wrong.

Second, I think Langston is going NCAA Division II. That's the rumor I heard last year.

I'd say the LU-to-NCAA Division II rumor is probably just that. LU had a chance to go with all of the other state schools into the NCAA back in the mid-1990s, but chose to remain in the NAIA.

Back then, the rumor going around was that LU was going to go into NCAA Division I-AA and join the SWAC. That obviously didn't happen, even though LU was playing Prairie View and Grambling on a reasonably regular basis in football at the time.

I couldn't see the Lone Star taking Langston, although it would balance that league between North and South a bit. A lot will depend on what the new president at LU wants, but it will be awhile (at least a year or so) before he/she comes into office.

From an outsider's perspective, it would seem that Langston would be better served by maintaining NAIA membership, playing football in the Central States league and joining the SAC for other sports. Its travel costs would drop considerably, since it wouldn't be going to Texas all the time to play those Red River Conference schools.

Apparently Langston has provisionally joined the NCAA Division II SIAC. Here's the release from last December:

http://www.thesiac.com/index.php?page=article&&article_id=220

PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL APPROVES CLAFLIN, LINCOLN, AND LANGSTON FOR PROVISIONAL MEMBERSHIP IN THE SIAC

December 20, 2004

ATLANTA – The Council of Presidents of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has approved the provisional membership of Claflin University, Lincoln (MO) University, and Langston University to join the conference.

The NCAA defines a provisional membership as a prerequisite for active membership. Before the institutions can become an active member, they are limited to a four-year period to prepare their school to officially join the conference. During this time, they make all of the necessary adjustments to administer their athletic programs in accordance with the SIAC constitution, bylaws, rules, and regulations.

“We are delighted to give Claflin, Lincoln, and Langston the opportunity to become a part of the SIAC family,” Dr. William Lide, Commissioner of the SIAC said. “We also consider it an honor that these fine institutions would like to be a part of the growth and expansion of the conference.”

Claflin and Lincoln are no strangers to the SIAC. Claflin’s basketball team will play SIAC members schools such as Benedict, Clark Atlanta, and Fort Valley State University during the basketball season this year. Lincoln University plays Miles College in a football classic every year. All three schools will be incorporated into the playing schedules of SIAC schools in Fall 2005 and be recorded as non-conference games.

Currently, Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL is in its second year of provisional membership in the SIAC. The addition of three other schools will bring the conference’s institution total to 15. Once Stillman is activated, the conference plans to move forward with dividing the conference into east and west divisions.

I don't have strong feelings one way or the other. If St. Greg's doesn't wanna be in the SAC, good riddance. Langston would be a convenient fit, for sure, but whether it would be a philosophical fit or not, I'm not sure.

I think at least two schools would be voting no on Langston. It only takes one.

My first choice would be for SGU to stay in the SAC, even though it would still be a nice rivalry that OBU would want to continue either way.

Arkansas-Fort Smith is approaching that threshold where they can't compete at juco because of their increasing junior-senior enrollment. That would be a nice travel partner for JBU. But they aren't ready to commit yet, I don't think.

Maybe SGU is looking at Division II because of competitive issues, not travel. Also, Bacone has been mentioned as a possible new SAC team. Thoughts?

What Ray said about Langston would probably go double for Bacone.

I know of at least four schools (maybe more) that would NEVER vote for them to join the SAC.

And I think the commissioner is against it as well, although I honestly don't know how much stroke he has on the issue.

Another likely candidate would be Rogers State in Claremore. They are starting athletics this fall and President Wiley has been a big fan of the NAIA.

Can someone give me an idea as to why Bacone and Langston would not be invited? Is there history there? Surely it isn't racial...

Can't speak for anyone else, but the punches Langston threw the last time we scrimmaged would be one reason for Langston.

I have ill will toward Bacone for several personal reasons, regarding baseball and softball especially.

Bacone has been a consistent rule breaker since joining the NAIA ranks. Some of the people involved in their program also have a bad history from their time at other schools in the state.

I say we just invite Mid-America Christian or Hillsdale. Then we might be a little closer to the level of play in the GSAC.
