There's a reason things like those stick out. Because they are rare and because we look upon them with disgust!

Not so in soccer. How many flares were thrown? One? Six? 20? From where? One section? Two? Why would you bring flares to a game?

I can see one whacko grabbing a piece of equipment - like a bat - and losing control. But you have to have a little forethought to actually bring a flare to a soccer game, or are those just sold with pretzels?

Really? If it's so normal then why is it in the news? And the fact that you don't look at that incident with disgust doesn't say much for you.

Oops.

Remember when soccer tried to institute a rule banning black players under the age of 20 from entering their sport?

Remember when the soccer player's union attempted to keep the league from regulating illegal drugs?

Remember when that soccer player was caught using cocaine on multiple occasions and was allowed to continue to play?

This is exactly what I thought soccer players would say. Give me a break. There is no other sport where acts like this happen with such regularity. It just makes it easy to not be a fan. Not fun to watch on TV, not safe to go to games in any place but the US, where the soccer is horrible. Hey guys lets go kill our goalie for messing up that play. That would be fun.

Of course not...because there's no other sport that's played professionally in almost every country in the world.

Flares guys.

Not just one. Someone planned it! Who goes to a game planning to hurl flares onto the field?

Soccer fans.

that the MLS is the worst soccer league in the world. The US squad might be getting better but that means there are what, 12 guys in this country that are pretty good, while the rest are terrible. All I know is Landon Donovan, the so called next biggest superstar went to Europe and couldnt hack it so he came back here so he could be the big fish.

Because I've known you so long, ZH, I'll cut you a break on this one. You obviously know little about soccer if you say MLS is the "worst soccer league in the world." It's certainly not at the level of the German, Italian, Spanish, English, etc., leagues, but it's not the worst in the world by any stretch.

There are pro soccer leagues on every continent. If you're measuring on a percentile scale, with 100 being the best league (probably the German or Italian), then MLS would probably fall in the 70-80 range. Good, but not great.

Landon Donovan signs with one of the world's premier teams, doesn't play much and decides to "transfer" back home. To say he "couldn't hack it" in Europe is silly, because he's played there before. And there are dozens of Americans playing in Europe now, none of which are as good as Donovan. You need to know your facts before you make such a blanket statement.

Now go back and argue with Dad about the KCAC. You've got much firmer footing to stand on in that case.

ZH and Ray, baseball has had its fair share of fan-led dangerous incidents as well as numerous incidents of scandal through the years. This steroid thing is only the latest.

But I come not to bash baseball -- that's too easy -- but to defend soccer, and to educate ZH as well. You say the soccer is terrible in the U.S.? Then I'd ask you why the U.S. soccer team is ranked in the world's top 10. Actually, the soccer here has made great strides in the last two decades. The U.S. made the quarterfinals of the last World Cup. That hadn't happened in 50 years.

Also, you can go to a soccer game in England (outside of Liverpool, which is full of crazies anyway) and feel perfectly safe. I can vouch for that. You're probably safer at a British soccer game than you'd be at the Oakland Coliseum for a Raiders football game.
