While I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your son, the circumstances behind his accident do appear to place to point in direction of poor driving decision(s) on his part.

EXCERPT:

"Rogers’ car went off the road just before 11 p.m. and clipped a telephone pole before becoming airborne, flipping and landing on its top.

Officials are not ready to release specifics about the possible cause of the accident, the deputy said, though he confirmed that speed is being considered."

Also, here's an explanation for the lack of airbag deployment it these situations. It matches the conditions noted in the article above. NOTE: This phenomenon is NOT limited to only Kia vehicles. It does however support your claim that there may be a more effective way to trigger airbags based on accident conditions. But again it's apparent that few if any auto makers do it any differently. So while you are probably correct that Kia's designing their airbags to essentially meet government regulations, so are all the other makers of vehicles you could have alternatively purchased. About the only vehicle that I have seen handle such an accident better as far as roof crushing goes, is a Volvo SUV.

"Airbag sensors measure vehicle deceleration, therefore the vehicle speed and severity of damage are not always good indicators of whether or not an airbag should have deployed.

In most rollovers, airbags do not deploy due to the deceleration of the vehicle during a delayed rollover sequence. Additionally an airbag deployment during a rollover may increase the injury to the occupant if that person is out of position or the seatbelt is not working as designed."

Also note that your 1996 Blazer would have faired as bad or worse. Nearly all SUVs are notorious for having weak roof structures in rollover accidents.

The bottom line is that cars and trucks are not tanks, nor do they contain NASCAR rated 5-point safety harnesses and safety cages. Violent crashes more times than not result in fatal injuries. Especially crashes where the vehicle becomes airborne and impacts the ground and other objects erratically.

May God grant you the peace you're searching for during what is most likely an unprecedented time of loss and sorrow in your lives.

I just don't think that accusing Kia of not caring about your son's life or shoddy product quality is going to help you find what you're looking for.... or need.

Best wishes,

-SM
