Subject: 2006 KIA Sorento Unnecessary Fatality

On August 22, 2007 our son Robert A. "Bob" Rogers, age 22, was killed in an accident while driving a 2006 KIA Sorento. My wife purchased this vehicle to replace her aging 1996 Chevrolet Blazer and we firmly believe that our son would have walked away from this accident if he had been driving the old vehicle. She purchased the 2006 KIA Sorento based on it's warranty and claimed 5 Star Safety rating. Even though the initial frontal and side impacts were severe in nature, no airbags deployed. The vehicle rolled over and the roof collapsed. The initial frontal impact was enough to drive the radiator into the engine and bow the hood upward, blow out the driver's side front tire and dislodge the fender well liner completely. Only after our son's death did we retrieved the owners manual and read carefully the section concerning the airbag system, what a shocker reading that section was for us! More illustrations and words on when the airbags will not deploy than when they will deploy! After careful reading there is only one conclusion that any reasonably minded person can come to, KIA designs their airbag system to pass the required U.S. Government tests only!!! No real consideration to the safety of occupants is designed into their airbag system!!! It is noted in our son's accident report that while rescue personnel were attempting to extract his body from the wreckage, one of the workers bumped the then exposed side curtain airbag sensor and the driver's side curtain airbag attempted to deploy!!! This would be comical if not for the needlessly fatal nature of the accident. It is our opinion that the 2006 KIA Sorento is a death trap for all driving them.
