I think the audience's reaction is just as important as the performer's abitly to create the enegry for the audience. A personal example of this particular experience was when I went to Jack Johnson and Ben Harper (both similar types of music). Jack Johnson opened for Ben HArper and the difference in performance and the difference in audience reaction was very distinct. Jack portrayed a very mellow, and low key performance. Ben on the other hand, gave a very upbeat and lively show. It was very interesting to see the transistion of energy.
