As a long time FHLer (I've been using the sim for over 5 years now) you tend to notice a lot of problems with the program. The FHL simulator is one of the worst simulation programs I have ever come across.

Anyway to my point...the FHL sim does not give any bonus to a smart GM. For the most part, you need to spend money to make money. If you don't make the playoffs, you are at a significant disadvantage. There was one league I was a member of that went through 10 seasons...and had a similar signing structure. The problem became that the best teams were able to generate the most cash (the New York Rangers had Peter Forsberg, Kovalev, Jose Theodore, and a team that boasted a third line of Viktor Kozlov, Shane Doan and Radek Dvorak)...his team was able to generate $70+ million in revenue over 3 seasons. While my team being one of the worst only generated $6 million. This is a significant problem when his team could easily sign anyone to a signing bonus and I am struggling just to keep a team together. I did have Kovalchuk, Heatley and Rick Nash along with some veterans and the best goaltending tandem in the league, but that was after a lot of work, and a lot of losing...my team was the only one to never make the playoffs in the 10 seasons.
This problem goes over all of FHL...the best teams make a lot of cash in the playoffs, while the non-playoff teams get further in debt by not being able to compete financially. The best teams get better, the worst teams get worse, and the middle teams fight for the few remaining playoff spots. It is right that as long as stupid trades aren't made, you don't end up being a part of the bottom section, but it becomes a significant challenge to get better...especially when most players are resigned.
