I am having a hard time figuring out what happens to bh and mh, particularly around broad vowels, some guides say they move to /w/, others say they remain /v/ as if they were slenderized. Also, what are the rules for when they end up as dipthongs /ai/ or /oi/. So is is a "an bhfuil" /an wil/ or /an vil/, or maybe /anvwill/? Does word position predict?
Similar questions arise for dh and gh. Do slender dh and gh always become /y/ glides? When do they become /ai/ or /oi/ versus the /g'/ affricate when broadened?

I want to name my harp either "The Wind" Or "Gentle Breeze." I am afraid to name it because I don't want it to have a bad conotation. Would "A' Ghaoth" be appropriate or would "Geay" be better? I don't want it to have the meaning of 'flatulance.' Tee hee. I would like for it to be easy for English speaking people to pronounce; I would also like for it to be pleasant sounding--one word if possible. I'm right in the middle of the lessonn plan and have gotten into the habit
of doing the lessons on my two hours bus trip home every night .
P.S. My Aunt Deliah is 96 yrs old and she 's unfortunately in and out of
a normal state. Most of the time she speaks Irish. Since their are a limited
number of people in my family who can still speak irish. It was a great surprise that all my studing here came to a great use . She was speaking some the words a little different than you taught u I guess it was her accent s. Apologies if you've covered this a thousand times, but can anyone tell me the basic difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic, and whether speakers of one of these languages can understand speakers of the other? Is it an "accent thing" with different slang between the two (like Madrid Spanish vs. Mexican, like London English as opposed to the New York variety), or are these languages as different as English and German are? I'm interested in the Irish language only, but am still curious.

sorry, i have a couple more questions about lesson four.
the first one is about the word "álainn". i know that in arabic, some adjecives change when applied to different types of words. like if you were to tell someone that they were beautiful, you might use a different form of the word than if you were describing an object as beautiful. does that apply here?
the second and third question have to do with a sentence given in this lesson, " Níl an aimsir chomh fuar agus a bhí sé inné." The word agus here, it is pronounced differently and means something besides "and"? and the word inné, i thought it meant today, but here it is used as yesterday. what makes the difference in this sentence?

I am on lesson four, and I have two questions. First, in the conversations, whenever the first person addresses the other, there is an "a" before the name. what is the reason for this, or what does it mean? Second question is, after a person answers the question how they are doing, then ask the same question back, they always reply, and how are you "yourself". My question is, in english we wouldn't say that because it would sound a bit strange. in an average conversation, would that really be in there?

The only languages I've ever learned to speak my entire life are english and french. English was my first language, and I'm currently studying French.
I'm very eager tt learn Gaelic, but I'm so used to speaking another launguage with a French accent, that my words are coming out with a bit of a French accent. (un- for example.)
Has anyone else struggles with that? If not, does anyone have any techniques to fix it?

I was wondering if anyone here could help me. I would like to know what my surname would be in Gaelic, it's Jobson (as in 'Son of Job'), I know there isn't traditionally a J in Gaelic, so I was wondering how Job is spelt in the Gaelic version of the Bible.

i'm trying to really learn irish gaelic so im seriously into it. I've been taking notes and learning all the words and whatnot. I've been doing everything in the lessons but im noticing that in some of the dialogs that there are several words/phrases that havent been mentioned before.
I'm wondering if I should take note of the words and phrases in the conversation examples that havent been mentioned in previous lessons.
I want to know cause I wasnt sure if it'd teach me in later lessons or if i should pick it up from the examples.

I did a little bit more digging around RTÉ for some more info and both Oisín and Pádraig were right. Thank you, gentlemen.
Raidió na Gaeltacht has studios in Dublin,Galway,Kerry,and Donegal. Off the the RTÉ home page on the left side there are link where you can get the different frequencies in all parts of Ireland, but the system itself is the national radio broadcast system of Ireland, so I guess the format isn't directed towards any one area but towards everyone, so indeed you will hear all of the dialects at some time or another. Whether you can identify who is from where will depend on your own experience in hearing them.
There are five radio stations and two t.v. stations listed.(I haven't tried watching Irish t.v. yet. haha.)-Lots of other links to different media also.
"RnaG" does have its own website where you can connect on to listen to the live streams, but I've already added "RTÉ" onto my favorites so I can chose which station I want, but "RnaG" is the only one so far that Ive found which is "all gaeilge all the time".It's really excellent.Now I can listen and study at the same time,or actually, I can do anything and everything and listen. I should add more speakers on so I can listen everywhere in the house. Hmmm. I'll have to work on that one.

Well actualy a couple if possible, I am hoping there is a Gaelic word for Knight (including any ranks of The Order), Squire, Dame/Lady (including any ranks of The Order) and Maiden. Again for a Ren. Faire group and perhaps a pheonetic guide to them and for Truth Against the World. I really do plan on making a study of the language once I am out of the Army so I will have the time to do it right, I know I just slaughter what I do know so far and I figure if it's worth doing then be the best there is. I've come upon www.rte.ie and in their radio live streams there is "RnaE" Raidió na Gaeltachta.I'm wondering if anyone knows where in Ireland this station is located so I know which dialect is being spoken.
There are several choices to listen to at "RTE". News,sports,music,a little bit of everything.It's really very nice. I can't wait 'til I am able to understand a bit more of what they a saying.LOL!
Anyway,can anyone give me more info about these? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Are casual terms used within a family such as Dad or Papa for Father or Grandma for grandmother?
Are there also more relaxed names parents call their sons and daughters?
I'm trying to write a story and I'd like to use the proper terms family members would use privately for each other.

i just had a question on ireland. well, moving to ireland to be exact. I was told that if you can prove that you have irish heritage you can become an irish citizen. Is this true?

I'm not sure where the "legend" of the luck of four leafed clovers got its start.My own personal opinion is that it falls into that category which also contains corned beef and cabbage,large parades,and green beer all being served up with a huge heap of sentiment on the 17th. of March.An American born "Irish" tradition.

The shamrock is one from several species of clover plants generally with three leaves that are found north of any tropical regions , especially throughout Europe.(All varieties growing in America were introduced from Europe.)
Its main sigificance in Ireland is that it is believed to have been used by St.Patrick to explain the trinity of the christian faith to the Irish people.
To find one with four leaves is extremely rare because it is essentially a naturally occuring hybrid of the plant and is considered to be good luck.
