This is ludicrous. A massage therapist? I didn't know that. I don't consider that to be a *lowly* profession, I wouldn't, however, consult you if I contracted diabetes. Where are you getting these stats? They are simply false. As for that first step "admitting that you are powerless over alcohol and your life has become unmanageable." You apparently see that as a defeatist attitude. I and most in my profession, athiests or otherwise, consider it to be a positive step. We're not talking about people who get bombed, wake up with a hangover and move on. Come on rounds with me in Emerg sometime and see how many patients are there as a direct or indirect result of chronic alcoholism. If you are physically and emotionally addicted to any substance to the degree that it affects your health, your job, your family, not to mention the saftey of others, then your life has, indeed, become unmanageable. Obviously, we don't give them a benzo, some free AA pamphlets and send them on their way. It's a process but acceptance is ESSENTIAL to begin the healing process. Addiction of any sort does not discriminate. I've had friends, colleagues, and patients from every walk of life wake up to find themselves in a desolate cycle they cannot escape by themselves. If someone is diagnosed with cancer, I certainly don't tell them there is no hope and I guide them as best I can. But a cancer patient in denial will not recover nor will a substance abuser. Here's another statistic for you since you're so fond of them. 68% of all deaths in Atlantic Canada last year were alcohol related and I didn't garner that info from a Vegas comedian's website.
