You did good! I remember when we went through this same thing. My kids said the same thing.."So that's why he acts so disgusting", etc.
They put the action with the drug use. My son said that this was easier to deal with because he initially thought that either my husband was completely nuts or that he was imagining his dad was nuts.
Telling them the truth really changed a lot for the better with us all the way around. Not only did it make my kids more aware of everything their dad did, they learned not to listen to his lies, manipulation and blaming but eventually, they would call him on his stuff and watch him.
I think it's one of the things that has helped his sobriety, he knows they're watching and they will not tolerate anything. They also are able to talk other kids that are going through this with their parents and they have a new compassion in their hearts.
Honesty is always best when it comes to our children.
