What you are experiencing is called 'sleep paralysis' and for years, I thought I was the only one! Then I looked my symptoms up on the net and found out all about it, and it was like a revelation, when I found out that other people have it too. It is fairly uncommon, being experienced by only about 10% of the population. Apparently, what happens is that when you go to sleep, your mind shuts your body down as well as your brain, so that you don't act out your dreams physically. When you happen to wake up before your brain wakes your body up as well, you then experience the paralysis. What I find so fascinating about it is that at least 90% of the stories I have read from different people are almost exactly the same. Many, many people report seeing hooded figures or things (like bedclothes, pillows, etc) flying around on their own. If this is purely a scientific function of the brain, then why are so many stories of visions the same? Also, the thing that EVERY sleep paralysis sufferer encouters is the overwhelming terror-pure terror! I do think that sleep paralysis is brought on by the scientific, physical reasons stated by scientists, but I also think that this is a gateway to the supernatural. Perhaps while we are in this state we can see and feel things, real things, that we normally are not able to. I have also found that after experiencing sleep paralysis, I will often fall back asleep and have a lucid dream, which I also consider to be a supernatural experience. Any thoughts or similar experiences? Please email me at gemini_626@hotmail.com.
There are also some good sites out there about sleep paralysis. You just have to look them up on a good search engine, I recommend dogpile.com.
