Subject: The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

1) How much oil is in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge? According to the U.S. Geological Service, 3.2 billion barrels. The United States consumes 7.2 billion barrels each year (Annual Energy Review 1999, U.S. Department of Energy.)

2) Liberals, Conservatives, oilmen and conservationists all agree that if we started today, it would take a minimum of ten years to bring any ANWAR oil to market.

3) Raising the fuel efficiency standards of ALL cars to only 27.5 miles per gallon (this is already the standard for most cars) would save one million barrels of oil EACH DAY (Union of Concerned Scientists)

4) Based on the above data, in a ten year period (the same amount of time it would take to bring ANWAR oil to market) the US would save 3.65 billion barrels of oil … that is MORE than the amount of oil that ANWAR has, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Twenty years at the slightly higher fuel efficiency standards … we’d save more oil than two ANWAR’s … and the savings would continue to add up.

This slightly higher fuel efficiency standard would also be consumer friendly … saving Americans $45 Billion per year at the pump …

And it would reduce our need for foreign oil … increasing homeland security.

I guess that this is why, last week in the Senate, moderate Republicans joined together with Democrats to defeat the President’s plan to drill in this wildlife preserve, and rightly so.
