TAXES, TAXES TAXES…PUBLIC EDUCATION BASIC MATH

Taxes, taxes, taxes. Between federal, social security, medicare, worker’s comp, worker’s unemployment, state income, state sales, county, school property, town property, phone, utility, life insurance and GOD only knows what other taxes, I figure we everyday working Americans “voluntarily” shell out at least half of our incomes to taxes.

It’s gotten so bad, most American families have already sent out their wives and mothers into the workforce just to pay the taxes. But we fortunate residents of the Peoples Socialist Perverted Republic Paradise of Vermont have one of the worst tax burdens. And it’s not just the income tax. You know what I am talking about - school property taxes and Act 60!

Like all other State home owners, I just finished scraping the money together to pay my property tax bill - from my family’s savings no less - so they don’t come and repo my home for back taxes due.

This great pleasure has prompted me to do some basic math re Vermont public school costs. Now these figures are just estimates, but let’s consider the following:

In Vermont, we spend about one billion dollars - that’s $1,000,000,000 - on public school education yearly now for about 100,000 public school kids. That means we spend about $10,000 yearly per public school child in Vermont in the name of “equitable“ and “quality“ education!

Funny, but we home schooled our kid for about $300 per year plus change for 3 years. We now send our kid to a private religious school for about $2,500 per year. (And, of course you know our education tax dollars stay with the public school bureaucracy, and do not benefit our kid in any way!) I guarantee you our child’s education is just as “equitable” and “quality” - if not superior - to that of any child in our State’s public schools.

Considering all the government bureaucracies involved in public education - Federal, State, regional districts and town schools - I got curious about our own Vermont Department of Education. I visited their website at http://www.state.vt.us/educ/new/html/directories/staff.html - my eyes getting blurry after the first 10 names - and I counted the following numbers of Vermont Depart of Education employees:

23 - Standards & Assessment:
27 x 1 = 27
18 - Special Education:
18 x 1 = 18
11 - Prof Development & Licensing:
11 x 1 = 11
10 each - Business Management, Adult Ed, Career & Tech Ed, School Finance:
10 x 4 = 40
9 - Mgmt Information Systems:
9 x 1 = 9
8 each - Act 117, Coordinated School Health, Legal:
8 x 3 = 24
7 - Student Support:
7 x 1 = 7
6 each - Curriculum & Instruction, Safe Schools/Safe & Healthy Schools:
6 x 2 = 12
5 each - Child Nutrition, Compensatory Education:
5 x 2 = 10
4 each - Commissioner’s Office, Education Quality, Medicaid, Substance Abuse Prevention:
4 x 4 = 16
3 each - Alcohol & Traffic Safety Education, Drivers Ed & Highway Safety, Educational Support System, School Quality:
3 x 4 = 12
2 each - Administration, Compensatory Education, Career & Workforce Dev, Early Education, Home Study & Ind Schools, Human Resources, Policy and Communications, School Construction:
2 x 8 = 16
1 each - CFO, Educational Technology, Federal Programs Administrator, Technical Education:
1 x 4 = 4

TOTAL = 206. Round that to 200 Vermont State Department of Education employees. That means there is about one State Dept of Ed staffer for each 500 public school kids in our State! Let’s say that each staffer earns $40,000 yearly total package. $40,000 x 200 = $8,000,000 yearly for just this one State agency’s annual salary packages alone! (I wonder how many State agencies we have in Vermont?)

So the next time you hear a State politician or official crying about budget shortfalls, an inadequate tax base, or not enough public spending on education, etc, etc, etc - I have a grand idea! Let’s start getting government off our backs and out of our lives by eliminating our State’s Department of Education!

Signed,
