Erm, the point that was made specifically questioned the "HUGE number of people who do" argument and the "takes a bigger hit from losing their business" argument.

The argument is that people still buy the same amount of anime, they just watch MORE because not only do they buy it they ALSO download fansubs. You can't counter that argument by talking about how many people download, you have to look at sales of heavily-fansubbed versus not-heavily-fansubbed titles. And that's going to be hard, because different titles are, well, different and you can't just directly compare numbers.

I will admit there is some evidence against this point (the Nuku Nuku one in particular), but in general measuring the effect of fansubs on sales is not the easiest thing to do.
