In some respects I disagree. No matter, there will always be people who create art simply for the sake of creating it.

Define the "wrong aspects" and the "wrong people" in regards to anime ^^. I think that a majority (if not all) anime companies would be agast if you suggested that making boatloads of money off of merchandising is a "wrong aspect" ^^.

Yes, Megatokyo is an extreme example, the same with most all of the popular online comics (who in most circumstances offer their comics for free and make money off of merchandise). But at the same time, they did not start off being popular either ...

You can point to those as successes, I suppose. The same with almost all of the actually sydicated comic strips (Dilbert, ect) which offer their strips online. Of course, comic strips are a lot cheaper to make then anime (or at least so far...).

Well, first off, I think that most companies want to fund titles that are merchandisable (is that even a real word??). Either through toys, video games, books, ect.

Up to a certain point. There cannot be too many Pokemons, YuGiOhs, ect, just because people don't have enough money to buy everything ^^.

A question is whether in the "merchandise" model, other companies are actually allowed to make the merchandise. If we are merely discussing digital copying, then merchandise might be right out of the window. Otherwise, I want my digital tee shirt ^^ ...
